The team currently constructed as is could still make the playoffs. There might be some transitioning difficulties still from the back end, but it won't sink the team considering how deep the forward group is

We have a good chance at the playoffs this year, highly likely in my opinion. But look at our RHD, Myers, Schenn, Poolman, Burroughs, one of the worst in the league. Myers and Schenn are on expiring contracts too. We also have zero RHD prospects that would be able to play top 4. We are going to have to pay for a RHD or add one in UFA in 2 years when Myers deal is up. Id be willing to trade Miller retained for Liljegren one for one since we have great wingers that can play top 6.

Our right side of defense is at worst middle of the pack, Schenn and Myers both held up pretty well last year. Woo and Johansson probably don't ever become top 4 caliber, but I won't count them out just yet. Obviously there is urgent need to get more RD prospects in the system, but that can be explored more aggressively next year if necessary

Hawks adding Kerfoot for a 3rd is a great value because they can re-sell him at the TDL retained for a 3rd maybe a 2nd. Yeah he is gonna help the Hawks but not by much their roster is terrible. They have the worst goaltending in the league Id be surprised if they won any games even if McDavid was on the team. They are gonna sell Domi, Athanasiou and hopefully Kane to recoup as many assets as they can, they should add Kerfoot onto that. Then they can go on a massive losing streak after the TDL to solidify their draft odds.

Can only retain on so 3 contracts though. Kane and toews are automatically 2 retention slots. I'd assume that last retention is already set aside for mccabe, Murphy, Johnson, domi, or athanasiou.
