I wonder how much Benning would’ve paid ZAR. Probably $3-3.5M AAV

Not in today's market, not with the obvious cap squeeze, but in previous off-seasons, who knows

Because of his good year last season he'll be asking for more than that. I'm betting his agent will ask between a 6-6.5 AAV on a longer deal. And here's why;
- Was 1st among NJD Dmen in average total TOI, EV TOI and PK TOI, and was 2nd in average PP TOI
- 46 points (1st among NJD Dmen)
- more starts in the D-zone than O-zone (about 45/55% split), but still had 50.9% Corsi

Keep in mind that Severson has been tasked with all those responsibilities playing on a bad New Jersey Devils team

I think that is right….Justin Faulk’s contract is the comp I have been using.

with today's cap squeeze, I don't think he gets the Faulk deal

True, but yet he had a very good year on that bad team in most metrics. Hamilton should’ve been the #1 guy last year, but it was actually Severson.

Fair, but the jury is arguably still out on what he is able to contribute on a playoff caliber team

Maybe. He could sign a team friendly 6 x $6 million to stay in New Jersey. I wouldn't lose any sleep.

That would raise a lot more questions than answer for you and your fellow devils fans. All three of Hamilton, Marino, and Severson locked up long-term? And it doesn't sound like they intend for Marino to be a trade chip in the short-term

He has been the #1 guy pretty much by default. Probably ought to be a #2 or #3, but has been our best all-around dman for half a decade.
(probably will be again this year too)

Its one of the reasons a good % of Devils fans are always disappointed in him.
Many grew up on Stevens, Niedermayer, Daneyko, Martin, Rafalski...and expectations have been set too high.

And Siegenthaler.

Siegenthaler -- Severson
Graves (then Hughes) -- Hamilton
Walsh -- Marino
Okhotiuk -- Mukhamadullin
Bahl -- Nemec
Edwards -- McCarthy

Should be a pretty good blue-line in there

It should, so is Ryan Graves just gonna walk at the end of the year?

I would think so. If NJD has Hughes, Nemec, Mukhamadullin all arriving in next year or so....and at least one of Bahl/Okhotiuk making the jump to full-time NHLer.

Before we acquired Marino and drafted Nemec, the conventional wisdom was that Severson extends right away, Graves plays this year and becomes trade deadline bait (if we're out) or walks (if he hold). But our Def depth chart is getting a little RD-heavy, so maybe it goes other way around.

LD
Siegenthaler
Graves (UFA 2023)
Smith (UFA 2024)
Hughes (can play RD)
Okhotiuk
Bahl
Edwards
(maybes: Vilen, Orlov, Vukojevic, Misyul)

RD
Hamilton
Severson (UFA 2023)
Walsh (can play LD)
Marino
Nemec
Mukhamadullin
Casey
(maybes: McCarthy, Leddy, Hurtig)

As i said in another thread i think it's overlap, unless someone's bowls Tommy over with an offer fir Severson
Hamilton
Severson
Marino
Nenec gets a couple games and develops in Utica
Once they see what they have in Nemec and how Luke grows in Mich they can then make a choice
As long as Severson does not ask for a nmc i see no problem

With you on all accounts.

(Hellebuyck would count for me as getting bowled over though)
