There will be almost $20m free even with those signings, trades & extensions in 2024 when Mo & Lucas are RFA.

Miss 1 or 2 solid defensemans, and that can be great.

You’re wrong. Before signing the extensions there is $20m free on top of their 2021 salaries, boss.

It’s some nasty retention but I think the compensation is close in terms of paying for it.

I'll play along. Seth Jones at $7M is a very good contract for a really good top 50 dman in the league (top 20 right handed guy), there would be a pretty big market for him at that price, thus making this a no from the Hawks. Kane and Seth at $7M is worth more

That trade w Hawks is the worst I've ever seen. Why do Detroit need a soon to be 34 year old UFA Kane and a RD Seth Jones with a contract until he's 35, especially with Seider occupying 1st line RD spot??? This trade would wreck Detroit for the next decade. I'm happy you're not the GM.

I think you’re overreacting a bit.

Patrick Kane has shown zero signs of slowing down and is playing at as high of a level as he ever has.

I believe you do need two great two-way defensemen on your team and we have one. A defensemen like Seth Jones at age 35 isn’t going to be a negative contract at that point. In fact, Seth Jones at $7m at age 35 will be a bargain by then. We’re talking 7-8 years from now, which by that time, top defensemen will be getting $12m AAV contracts like they’re giving out the $9m ones now.

And how would it wreck us for the next decade?

We give up two future firsts, two current starters (one’s hurt) that combined make up Kane’s extension salary and are average NHL players at that. Along with a handful of B prospects. What exactly is so devastating about that?

This is a Stanley cup contending roster, and a lineup with the potential to be the highest scoring team in the NHL.

What is that worth? What’s retaining $2.5m worth?

Let’s say Chicago found someone willing to take Seth Jones and his full contract at $9.5m; what do they get in return?

What does Kane fetch alone? You would assume whoever acquires him as well would require some retention there as well even though he’s just got the one year on his deal, not many teams can afford to take on that cap hit.

We would be wasting most of our rebuilding years for a little temporary shot at making the playoffs. Wings would be rebuilding again in 2 or 3 years. At best it's a Ken Holland type move although I don't think even he would even go that far. Very short sighted to say the least.

This roster having a chance to be the highest scoring in the nhl is a pipedream and not realistic at all.

Like I said.
Horrible for Detroit.

No offense of course 🙂.

The forward corps is good but not elite and only definitively passes NYI and BOS with no marchand, around even with PIT, WAS, OTT, and NJD. Seider is a stud on the backend but the rest of the defensive corps is looking pretty horrible. Edvinsson will hopefully turn out well but very few rookies especially defenseman are real difference makers and Jones is at best a 3 on a playoff team -- even if those two hit their best case scenarios and Seider doesn't regress, 4-7 is legitimately horrible. Also counting on two goalies that aren't even that young but have a combined ~40 games of good hockey between them.

Detroit will improve but they were miles out of the playoffs last year despite getting about as good of seasons you could hope for from their young guys. The only team in the east that really took a step back is Boston due to injuries and the already horrible Flyers. They will improve and be much more competitive next year, but the gap they (and Ottawa and NJ) need to make up is a lot larger than I think people realize. My hot take is that the 8 eastern playoff teams are the exact same as last year.

Cap hits are prorated against games played which is why you won't see Kane being moved before the season. The more games he plays the less his cap hit is. Yes, Chicago will retain and a team will send a cap dump back to Chicago in return. Kane at half retained somewhere before the TDL is a 1st (which will be a late first) and a very good prospect. Depending on the cap dump going the other way and term of it, that price could go up.

Seth Jones at $9.5M is not moveable very easily. At $7M he's going to bring in a pretty decent haul. Problem is, no team retains $2.5M for 8 years because it would take so much in return to eat $20M of dead money to the Hawks.
