Weird Idea for Three-Way Trade

Created by: Anus_McLeod
Team: 2022-23 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 2, 2022
Published: Aug. 2, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Avs end up with Donskoi and futures, Kraken end up with Bailey, and Isles end up with Compher at a cheap cap hit and cap space for Kadri.

Does it make sense, and what would be added (specifically from the Isles)?

Doesn’t make sense for Colorado. Donskoi for Bailey kind of makes sense but I doubt either team would be that enthusiastic lol

Only makes sense for Colorado if the sweetener is sweet enough. Donskoi for Compher is more or less a wash, so it's all about those futures.

But yeah, retaining for futures is totally outside the box for a contender and won't happen. It might be better than using the cap space to add meh veterans to the nacho squad though, which may be what happens.

I still think he ends up in Ari, he has a $5M cap hit but only $3.5M in real salary which will be attractive to Ari as it saves them $3M over 2 years. If you move Bailey out for Kadri to come in you can attach Bellows to the trade since he most likely does not have a spot in the top-9 and add in a 3rd.

It's possible. But I think Arizona and everyone else are close enough to the floor that they may not be that interested. Still more likely than this though, lol. Just trying out something different.

Colorado only does it if what the Isles are adding makes it worthwhile. Just for discussion, let's say it's their first rounder. You still sour on it?

Not saying it will be a first, but the sweetener would be the only reason Colorado would go for it.

Ari may only act as a pass through, retain 2.5 on him and use the other 2.5 to hit the cap floor while only paying 1.75 in real money and collect assets from the Isles and a team they are moving him too. Ari could come out of this with 2 3rds and Bellows.

Donskoi for Compher is pretty much a wash but Compher's cup experience and versatility (mainly the ability to play C) makes him more valuable to COL imo. Avs shouldnt be retaining any salary in a trade that doesnt make them better when they are trying to compete - If anything COL would be adding the sweeteners to get other teams to retain. Cup contending teams shouldnt be interested in downgrading their roster (or limiting roster improvement by retaining salary) to get futures

Meyers brings similar attributes to Compher, so while I don't disagree that he's a bit more valuable than Donskoi, I don't think he's critical either.

The other thing I'll say is that Colorado doesn't really have any sweeteners left. Olausson, Behrens, and their first is about it, as no one else has a lot of value. If they could get assets, it opens up other options for them down the line.

It won't happen, but I don't think it's a terrible idea, especially if they can get Stastny or Rodrigues for what I have the former at here.

This makes zero sense for Colorado. Why swap Compher at $3.5m for Donskoi at effectively $5.65m?

To get futures. It's in the description. Like I said to Spyeye, what if the sweetener is a first round pick? Basically you take away couple million in cap space away but end up with the same strength of roster and an additional first. That's the whole point of the acgm.

It's out there. But it seems the alternative at this point is just signing depth for healthy scratch duty.

Avs need capspace to ice a more competitive roster, not less. They should be the ones paying for capspace, not selling it.

There is no one left that cap space can be used on except Kadri. If Naz goes to the Isles, then the Avs are sitting on space. And they have no assets to get a player through trade. Sure they can sign Jack Johnson and a depth forward to sit in the press box, but this is another option. Here they would have assets to move at the tdl as a result of such moves.

They have up to $3.5m in bonuses to account for, lest they have overages leaking onto 2023's roster. They'll also be able to accrue quite a bit for the deadline.

I'm not worried about how much space they can accrue by the deadline when they don't have the assets to trade for anyone making a decent salary anyway.

They still have all their remaining 1st round picks which are typically the most valuable currency at the TDL each year.

It also wouldn't be surprising if they move Newhook at the TDL if he hasn't taken the 2C role by then. He'll probably be too expensive to keep as a 3LW beyond 2023, so it could be 2C or bust for him on the Avs.

They're not trading Newhook. That’s nuts.
