Valimaki gets lost in the shuffle in Buffalo, no reason to part with a 2nd

So Chicago is getting a bad contract and giving up Toews with half retention for a second and a third?

There is a feature for adding retention when doing a trade. Click the "+" symbol next to their name in the trade builder

Considering Toews has full control of where he goes (I would guess Western Canada) that's a very good deal when you factor in his recent results. Hall got a 2nd and Anders Bjork in the same situation Moanhan can be flipped at the deadline with again 50% retention

Make it a first if the hawks are taking Monahans cap dump or no half retention

He will score at least 40 points after years of surgeries to get better…not a camp dump. Monny was a 6th overall pick and is top 3 in scoring in his draft class lifetime…and Hanifin was 5th overall and verify solid and big.

Then keep him. Why get rid of such a great player for old man toews?

Nah, the only real advantage of Toews is his faceoffs and PK (not a major need with our strong PK depth). Both him and Monahan would probably get around 50 points next season on the Flames

Really no point in the hawks making this trade then. Between retaining half on toews and taking back Monahans full cap hit, the hawks are losing cap space and losing the better player for a 2nd and 3rd. I mean Davidson obviously does it but I don't like it. Toews half retained alone should warrant atleast a 2nd. Monahans cap dump costs more than a 3rd.

I disagree with this evaluation. Toews really isn't worth as much as you think and Monahan's value isn't negative
