I would certainly accept that offer as the Anaheim GM.

Could easily retain at deadline for possibly another second

I decline. That 2025 2nd rounder is 5-6 years from playing an NHL game. Has to be the 2023 pick.

Eh, we have 3 2023 seconds as it is. A later pick helps keep the pipeline fresh without a massive log ham of 2023 draft picks. I'd still do it.

My thinking exactly. It just feels intuitively that two picks in one round give a better chance at a successful player than a fourth pick in one round.

I agree with you on this one, don't want picks in 2025 for a cap dump. A team has options if in the end they don't want to take the picks. Either use them to move up in the draft, use them in trades for players or trade them back a year for an extra pick added.

There's a decent chance waiting until 2025 gets us a better 2nd round pick. A 2023 Florida is probably going to be near 60 again, by 2025 they may have fallen off a bit given some of the guys the need to resign or replace, including Knight.

It’s not about making the pick. It’s about assets. If the ducks make all of their selections then they’re doing it wrong.

Pick 64 in 2023 is worth more than pick 33 in 2025 right now.

The difference between the 38th and the 64th picks is minor if you look at a pick value chart. The difference between 2023 and 2025 is huge (in my opinion).

We know 2023 is going to be a great draft, but does anyone know what 2025 will have yet?

I have yet to hear anyone "in the know" comment on the 2025 draft as to quality or depth so who knows at this point. But that's not super relevant to me in this debate because we're talking about 2nd round picks. In any draft a 2nd round pick is an iffy thing. Just at a high level for example from 2010-2015 the Ducks hit on 5 2nd's and missed on 3 2nd's. That's a pretty good track record, better than a lot of teams do.

Rather than draft quality or pick position, for me, this is a matter of assets now vs assets in the future. I can give you $1000 today or $1500 three years from now... which would you rather have? I'm taking the $1000 today every time banking on that in three years time I'll have more than $1500 worth of value. That's just how I think about things like this.
