I kind of think a Muzzin trade just doesn't happen now. They (the Leafs) will go into the season probably with 7D assuming Sandin signs. I could see a Muzzin move happening later if Gio still has enough to play third pair and Sandin/Lily progress as hoped. By the deadline it's possible teams that are contending experience their own injuries to a top 4 guy, or a team making a surprise run wants to add. Cap hits become a fair bit more palatable when the cap space is pro-rated near the deadline.

Theres less than a 10% chance of Muzzin being moved imo, Kerfoot/Holl are the most likely to me to be moved out

Moving that big of a cap hit (Muzzin's) wouldnt be worth it for the Leafs, hes more valuable on the Roster than off it. Especially when you consider they'll have to pay (something significant, whatever that is) to move him

Who are they moving to get under the cap AND have enough space to sign Sandin, which in reality probably takes ~2 mil AAV?

When has there ever been a player of Max Pacioretty's quality not just traded for Future Assets but with the sweetener of an A prospect RhD thrown in?

Citing the absence of precedent in an unprecedented environment isn't a very compelling argument. (Not that I think we'll get a first plus for Muzzin -- I think that's overboard -- but that my friend Salzy is right in thinking that there's no motive for us to do anything without an incentive.)

There's also no incentive for the Leafs to make that ridiculous trade though - why would they give up a ton to move a player they don't have to move? Pacioretty was a bit of an odd situation because (pre-LTIR Lehner) Vegas needed to clear a pile of space and still don't really have close to a full roster.

Even Marleau, who had a higher cap hit and was a far worse player, only went for a 1st. And even then, Carolina was the only option because they had to buy him out since Marleau would only play in SJ (so the cost was inflated due to the necessity of a buy-out). Muzzin is a useful player and would be expected to play for the team he's traded to.

There's really no reason for the Muzzin trade to happen for either party. The Leafs don't have to and certainly don't seem to want to move him, Anaheim doesn't need him. It makes no sense.

Marleau wasn’t productive

But the Maple Leafs HAD to do it. The premise here is that for whatever reason, Toronto deems it necessary to move Muzzin NOW. We're not talking about strategic plans here; we're assuming that Muzzin is going, and we're debating the cost.

For the record, I've stated many times that I think it would be an egregious error for Toronto to move Muzzin this off-season.

Yeah, 100% agreed. I don't think moving Muzzin is terribly likely right now as a cap move at all. Maaaaybe later in the season as part of some kind of hockey trade, but even then I think unlikely. He has value to the team.

As has been suggested a million times, it's probably Kerfoot.
