They just traded the 13th pick for Dach lmao — this would be hysterical but it’s unrealistic.

Yeah, obviously very unrealistic, but if a GM wanted to get MTL moving on their cap situation, this is a way to do it.

I think they can still match because they can go over the cap during the offseason but need to be compliant by the start of the season. (At least I am pretty sure that is how it works)

Montreal can match anything under 3.6 mil. We currently have 200k cap space and Byron's 3.4 mil will go on LTIR to start the season since he is expected to miss half the season. Therefore if you want Dach you are going to have to go over at least 3.75 mil. Also if you did and we really wanted to keep him we could waive pitlick and send him to Laval, if he gets claimed not a huge loss if not we open another 1.25 mil so you might have to go as high as 5 mil and that is without any trades.

Yes it does work that way but with Byron also going on LTIR to start the season we are not as cap strapped as people seem to think.

Is it? Montreal can make that contract work without making another move.

Even if you ignore the guys that are likely headed to LTIR, they still show Drouin on IR, but he should be healthy to start the season. Signing Dach to that contract lets Montreal move contracts down to make the cap work. Montreal played this game all of last year even accounting for Weber, this isn't new territory for them.

That also doesn't get into how... unadvisable... it would be for a team in Minnesota's specific position to invite retaliatory offersheets.

Which for the Wild, would not make sense, as they cannot afford him at $5M per after this year unless they unload another expensive player next year, would also open them up to offer sheet retaliation with Boldy and Rossi over the coming years.

Yeah - the retaliatory offer sheets would be, well, not ideal, unless they were to have an extension in place for Boldy prior to doing so.

It has nothing to do with Boldy, it would be any higher end young player eligible for an offersheet. The moment the Wild become vulnerable, they'd get hit. That's how retaliatory offersheets work.

I mean, Boldy, Rossi, Walstadt are really the 3 that come to mind as of now which would be scary to lose as a fan.

So, be prepared to risk losing one of them. Because Montreal's going to have cap space and the incentive to make offer sheet and would do so whether or not they match a Dach offersheet.

Yeah, Byron is expected to be out 4-6 months, so roughly half the season
