Wet Blankets

Created by: EmilieCastonguay
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 24, 2022
Published: Aug. 24, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1.) Trade to WSH gives flexibility, shedding one pending UFA in Eller for another in Miller (50% retained). Iorio is VAN's demand and unless he is a training camp standout (unlikely) is destined for another year in Brandon before potentially joining Abbotsford for the '23-24 season or best case, competing for a roster spot in VAN. Eller gives a veteran PKer and could be dangled for future returns at the TDL.

2.) OTT might not have Formenton or Batherson due to off-ice issues. If so, they will need scoring support. Garland fits the bill as I have said many times before. 1st line scoring without any significant time on PP1, while playing up and down the lineup in 2021-22. Dermott is depth for OTT that they can extend or flip at the TDL. JBD is a nice young piece and could potentially pair with Hughes on pedigree. Will see what happens in training camp. Worst case, he platoons this season and the Canucks need to juggle around with what they have.

JBD has been touted as Chabot's future top pairing D partner for years, if he was ready to fill that role he'd already be in the nhl and sens wouldn't be looking for a top 4 RD, will be at least another year in the ahl for him. Also if we lose batherson and formenton we'll probably look inwards to Mathieu Joseph / ridley grieg / sokolov / jarventie or maybe even go the UFA route and get a sonny milano type. Giroux, Debrincat, Brady, Norris and Stutzle are more than enough to carry the majority of the load upfront.

Ottawa wouldn't have any interest in that.

They WANT JBD and not Dermott

Garland is not needed at all.

See there? Ottawa has 6 guys in the top-65 and several other guys who could get there

Watson is not costly and UFA at the end of the season, they will want to keep his veteran presence, he doesn't have a lot of value in a trade anyway

Ottawa has no interest in this. Garland to Ottawa has died when they traded for DeBrincat and died another time when they signed Claude Giroux

I actually think you're slightly underselling here.

This is the only time I've see a Miller trade to the Caps I would do as a Caps fan. Doubt VAN does it though. And only if it came with an extensions.

I do like the Caps trade, I think I suggested a Lapierre-Jensen trade a few months ago, but I do like Eller as a shutdown 3C who can kill penalties, sort of like Jordan Staal in Carolina, and Iorio is the kind of RD prospect. Schenn probably places over Poolman in the depth chart as of right now, especially in a 3rd pairing role. I also don't know that JBD is quite ready for a first pairihg role.

Imo, if we can keep Miller for something like a 7.5*6, it's probably a good idea, considering he might fetch meager returns, but if one or two of Podkolzin, Kuzmenko, Hoglander, blossom into top 6 guys, with Garland, Boeser, and Mikheyev, trading Miller to bolster our defense is a good option.

I appreciate your comments. I like OTT's depth, and you are right that they have solid on-paper depth in their top 6. I also made an assumption that some of that depth may be compromised due to an on-going investigation into a certain incident that has been in the news cycle through the summer months. Independent of that, it never hurts to have NHL scoring depth at a cost controlled number. Looking at my own team, who have professed to have depth in spades at the start of each season, only to have unforeseen injuries or COVID derail it.

I think Garland is a good piece who like I noted, scored at a 1st line pace while essentially getting 2nd/3rd line ice-time. He alone would justify the return for a player like JBD who hasn't reached his potential yet PLUS a first round pick. I was generous and assumed that OTT would prefer the '24 2nd round in exchange.

As far as Watson's inclusion, it was more of a numbers game PLUS a player like Dermott could slot in and support the Sens right now - which is why Dorian and company made right now moves like signing a 34yo Claude Giroux, traded for 35yo Cam Talbot, while also stocking for the future by trading away Matt Murray to the Leafs. If OTT is out of the playoffs or want to move in a different direction, they could flip Dermott at the TDL for picks or prospects. OR as an RFA, they have a measure of cost control that would allow them to accommodate salary increases to other RFAs (and more prominent ones) like Tim Stutzle and the aforementioned Alex DeBrincat.

Yeah. Making a big leap of faith that players like Podkolzin, Kuzmenko progress and Hoglander returns to form. If Miller is traded, it will definitely create a hole, which I am sure is why he hasn't been traded yet. VAN is not confident that the players remaining could fill the hole without getting a return of a "now" player, along with the futures. Typically the team trading the star always ends up on the short end of the stick. I think at this point, the $7.5M signing is a pipe dream, especially with the announcement of the increased cap in '24. The team, IMHO, should cut bait with the best possible offer prior to training camp.

Yeah value of your proposal is fine, it's just that Ottawa should need JBD a lot more in the future than either Garland or Dermott

Also, of course if Formenton and Batherson were guilty, that would complicate things. Replacing Batherson won't be easy but Sens have several good forward prospects still developing, so Formenton shouldn't be too hard, although his speed makes him pretty unique
