Predictions- New York Islanders

Created by: Z0ra
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 30, 2022
Published: Aug. 30, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Islanders will get 7th in the Metro. Hot take here. Contrary to many belief, I think the Islanders have another down season. Most of their moves were underwhelming, like acquiring yet another defensive d-man in Romanov. He isn’t the offensive d-man that the Islanders desperately need, luckily they did resign Dobson. They did miss out on signing Gaudreau and Kadri, which were the two big fish free agents. The forward core still remains the same, though Raty could prove himself as a late-round steal. Last season was a good one, but can he produce well at the NHL level? That remains unknown, a nine-game trial will answer that question. The Islanders saving grace however, is Sorokin. Whether he can repeat his stellar performance from last season is also unknown.

For prospects, I think Raty is ready to get a look in the NHL. Last year he bounced back from his poor draft year performance. 40 points in 41 games in a men's league is outstanding for a guy his age. A full season in the AHL could benefit him well, but a nine-game trail in the NHL should also be given.

Two things RE: Raty - first off, the 9 game trial wouldn't really apply if they're going to send him down to the AHL after it, it typically only applies as a contract-year slide for guys on their ELC who get sent back to juniors. Since Raty will be going back to Bridgeport, it wouldn't matter if he plays 1, 9, or 82 games for the Islanders this season, it still will burn one year of his ELC.

Second, while I could conceivably see him getting some time with the team this year, I don't see it coming at the expense of moving Cizikas off 4C and throwing Raty in there. Raty's D+1 season last year in Liiga was one of the best age-19 seasons in Liiga since they become a fully professional league in the late 1980s, and when you look at the names around him (Anton Lundell, the good Sebastian Aho, Saku Koivu, Mikael Granlund, & Teuvo Teravainen) it's all dudes who were strong offensive presences. Using him on the Isles #1 defensive line would be a waste of his talents, I can't see them utilizing him that way at all.

If raty could play I would like to see him 3c with a couple of vets Parise and palms to see what he could do then move JGP to top line with Barzal and beau to help defensively.

Isles didn’t “desperately need” another “offensive defenseman.” They needed someone who could play with Dobson on the second pair and they have that in Romanov. 22 year old top four d men aren’t easy to acquire.

Secondly. Yes the isles didn’t add Kadri. That’s a good thing. He didn’t fit the roster at all and he’s already 32 years old. The isles r relying on internal improvement from Wally, Bellows and Beauvillier. But at the end of the day this team is built around defense and goaltending. They don’t have any holes on that end now if Salo is on the opening night roster. This team is in good shape.

Pelech, Pulock, and Dobson are all above average offensively. The isles needed a top 4 defenseman with above average skating ability - they got that in Romanov

I don’t think this team is god awful but not particularly good either also I think bringing someone who has never coached at any level before is never a good idea

This team is truly a wild card, in the sense that you could tell me basically anywhere from 1st to 7th in the division and I could make a case for it. If you pushed me for a concrete answer, I'd say that enough guys had career-worst years last year that positive regression there, and upgrading Zdeno Chara & Andy Greene into Alex Romanov & Robin Salo, is going to be enough to push them into the last playoff spot.

And FWIW, Lane Lambert had WHL & AHL head coaching experience before Trotz made him essentially his right-hand man in 2011. He also did run the Islanders for a bit this year when Barry Trotz took some time off after his mother's passing and again when Trotz was in the COVID protocol. So he's not a total newbie out of nowhere.

he was head coach for the WHL's Prince George Cougars from 2003-2005; and then had a great run as the AHL Milwaukee Admirals' head coach from 2008-11, going 178-103-39 before getting the call to be an assistant in Nasvhille with Trotz. He also was acting head coach while Barry was away from the team when his mother passed in early January, so again, he does have some head coaching experience before this.
