Appreciate the response. These are the reasons I can think of (what are your thoughts?):

1) An additional unprotected top 5 draft pick in the best draft in 20 years with access to "generational talent players"
2) An additional 2nd round pick in 2024
3) The Devils are pretty stacked at RHD and won't have a need for a young star to come in for a number of years, so they may prefer to use the pick to draft for a different organizational need

Bedard, Fantilli, Dvorsky, Michkov would be better than Nemec. It is very possible that Habs get 1 of those 4. So no, Habs decline

Hard to surprise when we cannot be in the playoffs basically automatically. Detroit, Toronto, Tampa, Florida, Ottawa all have teams that are just better, and it would be hard to even be top 5 in the Atlantic.

True, though important to remember that was not a pick made on a "best player available" strategy, it was on organizational need. Most would agree Cooley is better than Nemec. Some would argue Wright is as well. Devils don't need Centers but they need wingers and Bedard/Michkov will be the best wingers drafted since Ovechkin.

I don't think it works for either side Devils need a top pairing RD and don't need another top center. Habs need both but why risk a generational talent like Bedard for another (don't want to say lesser prospect but I can't think of a better word) lesser prospect. I really like Nemec and wanted the Habs to draft him but Bedard is a very special kid

Bedard & Michkov are wingers in my opinion, but generational talent wingers without question. To be honest if Monahan manages a comeback, the Habs don't really need a C or RW/LW. They need a RHD and a G. Don't get me wrong, EVERY team needs a Bedard/Michkov, but I'm simply saying I like Nemec and he fills a big hole where as Slafkovsky and Caufield are gonna take up a LOT of salary at wing in a couple of years and it's hard to deploy that much cash at wing.

Only circumstances where I could envision such a trade is a scenario in which these occur:

1. Either Mukhamadullin, Casey, Walsh or one of our other RDs show another level that we didn’t know was there this season.

2. Devils extend Severson long-term (or acquire another top-4 RD that is locked up long-term).

3. The trade occurs after the 2022-23 season and it’s a known top-3 pick.

Otherwise, we’ll keep the bird-in-hand.

(We can give you Tatar back though)
