2 Big Trades and 1 Small Signing

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2022
Published: Aug. 31, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Calgary doesn't want to trade Anderson. Leafs don't want to trade Nylander. Both teams trade from a point of strength to address a need.
Vancouver would really need to like Sandin to make this deal. I am very high on Sandin personally. He has a great combination of skill, toughness and he is young.

Leafs get bigger, stronger, tougher to play against but lose some good pieces.
Vancouver gets 2 young assests in the 1st and Sandin and they can either keep Kerfoot and extend him or sell him at the deadline.
Calgary gets a substantial forward upgrade and their dcorp is still extremely good without Andersson.

ZAR would be perfect for their 4th line.

lol, Kerfoot would have been 5th in scoring for canuck forwards last year with no power play time and had a whole 1 point less than Boeser and Horvat. Guess every canuck forward but 2 are cap dumps

I guess so.
Edit. If Kerfoot is so good, why do Toronto fan keep trying to trade him? Also, he must have had some time on the power play last season as he had a pp point.

I have answered this question quite a few times.

Currently Leafs are over the cap unless they have an injury they haven't reported. He is the most likely candidate to make them cap compliant even though he is good. Also, in this situation they upgrade him to JT Miller. Which would be a huge benefit.

But short answer is to become cap compliant. Once they signed Jarnkrok it almost guaranteed Kerfoot being gone. But there are other possible outcomes also.

I would be perfectly happy with them keeping him if they can make the cap work some other way but that would involve Muzzin who has a full ntc right now or a guy like Nylander (highly highly unlikely).

I asked Jared, sarcastically, not because I haven't heard you explain it before, but because I found his response to be annoying. I haven't said that Kerfoot is a terrible hockey player and has no value to anyone, I have said that for the Canucks he doesn't hold value as we don't need more middle six wingers.
I know it's hard for Toronto fans to understand why other teams would do what's best for them and not what's best for Toronto.

because the leafs need some cap space if they want to flesh out the roster so it's deeper and he's the easiest to move. Oh, and sorry, he had a whole 9.5 mins of power play time all season, guess he's totally racking up those power play points eh?

Still don't understand why they would trade a 3.5 mil guy scoring 50 points if they could just lose other scrubs. I would assume Kerfoot brings more value than guys like Engvall and Jarnkrok

What other scrubs? Engvall played amazing last year in their bottom 6. He was a great shutdown guy and they just signed Jarnkrok to a 4 year 2.1m contract. As soon as they signed Jarnkrok it was almost inevitable that Kerfoot would be the guy out.

UNLESS a guy like Muzzin is hurt and the Leafs know this and he will be LTIR all year. Leafs don't really have anyone else to get rid of that would make them compliant.

A Nylander for Andersson trade means you could keep Kerfoot though but that is a massive trade and who knows if either or both teams do this.

But why Kerfoot? Clearly he produces more than any of Toronto's bottom six players. They have almsot no depth scoring behind their core 4. Leafs fans speak so highly of him so I am surprised they are all so willing to trade him given his 3.5 million dollar caphit

I suggest you play around with their roster and try to make it work.

Kampf and Engvall were both amazing in their role last year. Jarnkrok just signed.

Outside of them they only have guys 1m and under. So there is no one else to cut that makes cap.

In terms of defence they aren't getting rid of Rielly or Brodie. Muzzin has a full no move clause. Gio makes 800k. Lily makes 1.4k and Holl makes 2m. That's why we also move Holl sometimes!

9.5 is more than 0. Maybe Leafs fans should propose moving Kerfoot to a team that could use him, Calgary and Ottawa need forwards.

We propose Kerfoot to a lot of teams. I think Calgary is a possibility also. Winnipeg, Minnesota as well.

In this scenario he replaces JT Miller on Vancouvers roster. If you remove Miller, having a guy slot in like Kerfoot is not a bad move.

Ottawa doesn't really need him though. They got rid of Brown who would has a similar role than Kerfoot.

vancouver sure looks like they need a guy who can score more than almost all their forwards and get one less point than two others with less than 0.76% of his ice time on the power play

Problem is that he is an expiring UFA. If he were willing to sign a sweetheart home town deal at the end of the season, by all means acquire him. He just shouldn't be a guy Vancouver trades for right now. His sole purpose in this trade is as a temporary 3C stop gap and cap balancer

I dunno, a stop gap guy who will outscore most of your roster while playing both c and w do very well on the pk, come cheap in trade, not clog up long term cap and be very flipable at the deadline should your team be out of it sounds like a great investment

Again, if he is willing to sign an affordable contract, by all means. Problem is, while we are not over the cap limit, we are quite close. As long as Kerfoot doesn't make more than Miller is making right now, then it should be a feasable. I can't see Vancouver giving up more than a third round pick if we can just sign him in UFA

I mean I feel like it's disingenuous to talk about his scoring without bringing up the fact that he spend about 2/3 of his even-strength ice time skating with at least one of Marner/Matthews/Tavares/Nylander, and spent the vast majority of that time on Tavares' wing. I know Johnny's a little older and a little slower, but do me a favor and check what middle-6 guys like PA Parenteau and Matt Moulson did after they stopped skating on his wing, and tell me what Alex Kerfoot brings to the table that would set him apart from guys like that (or even other guys who made hay spending some time on his wing in Toronto like Andreas Johnsson or Kasperi Kapanen).

And, again, just want to point out that this:

is something that other GMs are going to know as well, and it's going to affect the value they place on Kerfoot. I could see Vancouver taking him back to help make cap work, sure, but you can't place much trade value on him in that case since you *need* to move him to make the deal work.

it's not disingenuous at all. That would only apply if someone was saying he was the primary driver of said offence, the ability to produce up and down the line up is still valuable and is part of the reason he's so versatile, especially when you factor in his rate /60 metrics staying mostly flat save a spike in primary assists. Simply having a good finisher on his line that can put in the passes isnt on him.
And he doesnt need to be set appart from guys like Moulson or Parenteau, but then if we're gonna bring that up Moulson had 9 goals and 14 points of 36 and 69 14 goals and and 24 of his 30 and 50 in his two best seasons on the power play while getting 5 or 6 more mins a game in his two tavares seasons and Parenteau had 19 and 20 power play points of his 53 and 67 points on the power play on 4ish more mins per game of ice time than Kerfoot got.
Kerfoot's even strength production has been good by any standard and with a steady 2nd line role and secondary power play time he'd produce significantly more than he does.
GM's love to value guys like this, he is very useful and brings significant value for his cap hit.

Easily? I doubt that. They may decline but they would definitely have a team meeting about this one first.

Nope it would be a very quick meeting if anything, Ras is worth about the same as Nylander except that he makes less and plays an extremely valuable position in the league while Nylander has elite talent he has attitude issues and defensive issues which would be a huge red flag for a coach like Darryl Sutter, on top of that you want Dube whos progressing well and might even see a top 6 role this year, Holl has no value for the Flames, so yea very easily pass.
