Description
I know I know: Stevie wouldn't do this. But, what if they loaded up some more? A very low risk move in my opinion. Lets assume Edvinsson makes it out of camp, which I think there's a good chance of. Why not sign Subban, who will not play every game? Maatta can likely be a good partner for him as a very defensive D, and you can rotate Subban in with Lindstrom if he is struggling or if you want to add a little more offensive look to the blue line in a game. Reminds me of the 2019 Blues using Bortuzzo or Gunnarsson depending on what they felt the bottom pair needed. If Subban sucks, 2 million isn't the worst thing to bury and you have guys like Walman, Oesterle, Pysyk and Hagg to cover. If he's good then that's great! If he's meh, its not like you don't have Lindstrom and can ride the hotter player.

I don't think Subban would sign with the expectation that he wouldn't be playing every game.

As a Devil fan I would suggest he plays like he should play every game instead of expecting it.

No thanks, Subban's best days are long gone.

Yeah I have to agree with NJDevils here, if Subban is playing in the NHL this year, he has to accept the reality that he won't be gifted a full time role. Otherwise, he'd already be on Arizona, MTL, etc. Now, if he does play like it, then that means the Red Wings are happy with the signing.

You could say the same for: Fleury, Jeff Carter, Nick Foligno, Marc Staal, Craig Anderson, Perry, Bobrovsky, and Erik Karlsson this year, and others like Thornton, Boyle, Stralman, Yandle last year. Yet they got chances in the NHL. Yeah, some of them sucked. But GMs continue to sign them even if their "best days are gone." I think if the Wings signed Subban for 2 million, and honestly I think I was being very generous on what he could get, and he scores 20-30 points for them on the 3rd pair playing like 50/60 games, I think they'd do backflips.

If you look at stats, Subban was good last year. GaR below Seider's but above everyone else in Detroit on D and G+-/60 the same as Seider. I think he would be redundant in Detroit since we don't need another RHD for running the PP but he's definitely worth some team taking a flyer on.

Good point on the “best days are behind him” response.

Although, I would have to lean heavily towards simply passing on bringing in Subban. I mean, maybe if Hronek goes down in training camp or something we could strongly consider him, but I just don’t see him being very valuable as a 6th or 7th defenseman on this team.

He’s always been a player I’ve been fond of but the fit just isn’t there and I’d rather just give Lindstrom all of the reps possible on the 3rd pairing.

So, barring injury; it’s a no for me.
