Rodrigues

Created by: TrueNorth
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 2, 2022
Published: Sep. 7, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jets desperately need depth scoring and particularly with a right shot. Rodrigues will either be forced into a PTO or sign a one year show-me deal. Jets have the cap space and could offer quality minutes. Wheeler is to a point in his career where he is better in sheltered 5v5 minutes and only playing 12 minutes per game effectively. Lines would equate to 1a and 1b and a 3a and 3b. Top lines getting 18-20 minutes a night and bottom 6 getting 10-12.

I like WPG as a landing spot for ERod. He needs a team where he has a shot at a bigger role than he had when the Pens got fully healthy.

Rodrigues agent said that the 2-3 teams that they believe are a good fit are trying to clear cap space to sign him. If that doesn't pan out (or they get tired of waiting), then I guess they consider the other teams further down on the list.

There’s a reason why Winnipeg hasn’t signed Milano or ERod, and it’s not on the jets end.

What do you mean, the Jets have tried to sign either or both of them but they aren't interested in signing with the Jets??

I’m only speculating, but Bowness talked about trying to add forward depth and they got outbid. Not applicable to those two as they’re unsigned, but that makes it pretty clear to me that they at least tried to speak with them and there was likely no interest on the side of Rodrigues and Milano. They’re the two top remaining forward UFAs and they’d likely have spoken to them at least.

I remember Wiebe reported that the Jets put in better offers on Heinen and Jarnkrok but they chose elsewhere for less money. If outbid includes attaching a dollar value to where you live, then I guess that could be considered outbid. grimace

Well maybe but Idk, doesn't necessarily mean they talked to either guy.

Milano doesn't really seem like he'd be a UFA target of Chevys to be honest.

I can't really get a handle on what WPG is trying to do.

Don’t worry, their own fans can’t either. They’ve been stuck between contending and retooling for years. Chevy picks and chooses when to buy and sell instead of committing to one router.

Which is why I said I’m speculating. Like mentioned above Wiebe reported that Jarnkrok and Heinen chose to go elsewhere for less money. Jets are willing to improve forward depth, you’d think they’d have talked to these two at least.

Running it back ... to 19th overall

or testing the hypothesis that a coaching change is all that is needed

Yeah, it's odd. I know WPG isn't necessarily a destination city for player, but it's not like they're AZ. Scheifele, Ehlers, Connor, PLD, Pionk, Morrisey and Hellebuyck is a very nice core to retool around. Not to mention some solid depth players and even with Wheeler's contract you have cap space to spare.

I feel like a retool doesn't even have to be that drastic. Two or three solid moves and you're a playoff team.

They have some promising young prospects too. They’re in a good spot. They just need to commit to one direction.

I think Milano and ERod would be good adds. Milano is a diamond in the rough and I was really hoping the Pens would nab him.
