Buffalo becomes contender

Created by: BuffaloDreamer
Team: 2017-18 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2017
Published: May 29, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Fix the D by getting Brodin.
Unfortunately Reinhart is sacrificed but Bonino UFA signing gives us a good 3C.
Protect Bogo and hope he turns it around.
Top line - all situations.
2nd line - Surround Eichel with goalscoring wingers and hope they light up the league. Pure scoring line.
3rd line - scoring line, Bonino to cover defensively for Tuch/Nylander and Kane's defensive abilities...mostly O-zone starts.
4th line - shutdown line.
Draft targets: BPA with first pick, draft goalie in late 2nd/early 3rd to restack the goalie prospect pool (Petersen gone likely, Kasdorf most likely bust, Lehner on show me deal only).
After next year Gorges to be gone for capspace. If Kane plays well in new system - re-sign him. Enough cap space left next season to resign Lehner and Eichel. If you are tight against the cap cause of G situation, dump Ennis's salary somehow to whoever takes it for whatever it takes.

I'd also be plenty happy with Hanifin instead of Brodin+Tuch. Then you put one of Bailey or Nylander as 3RW.

Radulov may take 6.5 mil to sign. I'd still do it as we are not yet in cap hell. 7 mil on short 3 year deal.

Why protect Bogo? He won't be selected by Vegas. And even if he was, that 5.5m to spend on real Dman.

I don't think he is. Risto, McCabe, and Brodin would be protected in this scenario.

Depends when you do the trade. If it is before ED - then Bogo is exposed and we hope he doesn't get picked. I think he still has value as a reclamation project. If he's gone we have to find replacement RD somehow for which agian we have to give up some assets. Maybe on a decent system he starts playing well again, so I'd give him a chance for redemption.

The trade only really makes sense before the expansion draft. If it happened afterwards, Minny would've already lost one of Brodin or Dumba to expansion and probably wouldn't be interested in dealing the other.

Trades seem very realistic
Fair value in all directions

Can't see Radulov signing here though
He'll have similar offers from much better teams

I'd do it from the Wild point of view, probably a little overpay by them, but it's reasonable.

I like the overall thinking..... would not give a 2nd just to have McPhee pick his son in-law. I would rather offer a 4th or lower and add another player that does not need to be protected.

If not protect Rino, Okposo, Kane, Girgenson, Foligno, Carrier, Risto, McCabe & Faulk.

Then McPhee can have his pick of the leftovers if he does not want Molson & a later pick.

Think Minnesota would be open to the two 2nd round picks & a player instead of having to move Sam?

Maybe if Scandella is the player Minny is losing, or Nylander is the player to go with he picks for Dumba/Brodin. Minny really is looking for specific things, picks just don't move the needle much. They are losing a good player to Vegas for nothing, the front office has basically admitted that. They can survive just fine losing 1 player, when they trade away another player for stuff is when they'll start to really feel it.

For the sake of helping other teams' fans make reasonable proposals, can you elaborate on what specific things Minny is looking for?

I do not see how it would make sense for Buffalo to give up two 2nd round picks & Nylander for Brodin or Dumba..... in that case let Vegas take one of them. I will wait for the D that Buffalo takes with the 8th pick and Guhle et al to develop. Minny has the exposure to lose something in the expansion draft (or include players and picks to McPhee in order not to take Brodin or Dumba whomever is exposed). They are going to be up against the cap as well. So based on your analysis Buffalo should pass on a deal with Minny and wait. Minny currently has a 3rd, two 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th round picks.

How about this Brodin straight up for the Buffalo 2nd round pick?

I agree that Minnesota isn't dealing from a position of strength. They have time against them and will lose either Dumba or Brodin for nothing if they don't make a move. They also have looming cap problems. Other teams know this and will factor it into what they offer Minny for either of those players.

That being said, Brodin is worth more than a 2nd round pick. I think Nylander or 8OA straight up is closer to fair. They'll likely be fielding offers from a number of teams for their defensemen, and will surely receive better offers than just a 2nd round pick.

I have multiple times, even put a post in the forums. Young (exempt) potential: 1C's (Reinhart, Dvorak, Strome (AZ), etc), game breakers (Nylander (either), Puljujarvi, etc), d-men (Hanifin, Carlo, McAvoy. etc). Those are really the only things that offest the player/s traded and the one lost to Vegas. Quality for quality (potential). Some of the players listed aren't on the market, I was just using them as comparables.

The Wild might not be able to put the best deal together, but they can at least get into the discussion if Spurgeon, Brodin, Dumba, Granlund, Nino, Scandella or Zucker are on the table. Otherwise the Wild can sit tight, and still have a good team next season even losing Brodin/Dumba, or Zucker to Vegas for nothing.
