So the Hawks wouldn't do this even if you added 4 1st rounders. It's just not remotely realistic to have a team retain $4.5M for SEVEN YEARS.

The hawks traded away their two best young forwards and are about to lose their two best old forwards, not sure what keeping seth jones around does for them. The current gm didnt give him that contract

The problem is that no one retain that much money for so many years, it would cost a ton, and not just Ostlund and two second.

It's not that I don't think Kyle Davidson is trying to rebuild the team...it's more so that $4.5M in dead cap for 7 years is very bad for HIS team. It's not hurting Bowman's old team...he's going to have to deal with that in the year 2029.

This is a matter of you not understanding the cost of salary retention across multiple years (in this case 7). Jones is 1M overpaid, not 4.5M. Look what OEL and Kessel returned with only slight retention, your offer is a joke. Hell even the Kessel retention messed with the Leafs salary cap right up until the end and it was only 1.5M.

If you need another example go look at what Minnesota is working with, it's brutal. They are basically a bargain bin team + Kaprizov for the next 3 years
