Fixing the defense

Created by: customvan92
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 6, 2022
Published: Dec. 6, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Important note. I am a leafs fan so I do not know the ins and outs of this team. Just had an idea and wanted to run with it. Let me know how bad this is in the comments. Lines are also a whatever since I don't know this team enough. Just mostly focusing on the trades.
Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Chychrun, Jakob
Additional Details:
Oilers need to fix that blue line and chychrun would immediately provide so much help that is desperately needed.
ARI
  1. Barrie, Tyson
  2. Bourgault, Xavier
  3. 2023 1st round pick (EDM)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
  5. 2025 1st round pick (EDM)
  6. 2025 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Asking price for chychrun is 2 first and a good prospect. I dont know much about the oilers prospect pool so i just looked up best oilers prospect. Please let me know if there is a better one to trade. The second and 4th is for dumping Barries contract.
2.
EDM
  1. Schenn, Luke
Additional Details:
Schenn is a older defensively responsible dman on a cheap deal. Is probably the easiest trade to make here.
VAN
  1. 2023 6th round pick (EDM)
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
This is what I've heard canucks fans say his asking price is. Only would work if they are selling at the deadline.
3.
EDM
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander ($1,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Leafs get a contract spot and save 1750000.
TOR
  1. 2023 7th round pick (EDM)
  2. 2024 5th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Oilers get a cheap forward who is good defensively. This doesn't solve the depth scoring issues but could help prevent games like tonight's from happening. Also costs next to nothing to acquire. Kerfoot can play anywhere so helps with injury and also can play the PK. Just a decent utility forward who would help out in the defensive zone.

I like these trades. Wonder if it’s too much for Chuyk and not enough for Kerfoot.

There has been some reporting out here (since a lot of sources discern a lively Los Angeles interest in Chychrun) that the ask is for two firsts and two prospects or the equivalent, so Barrie, Bourgeault, the 2023 first and 2024 second ought to be enough. On the other hand, if that's the ask, and no one has stepped up yet, maybe it's an overpay.

The Schenn and Kerfoot deals seem reasonable (although Toronto might hold out for a third or perhaps even more), but the stumbling block is Kerfoot's ten-team NTC.

Highly doubt kerfoot has Edmonton on a 10 team NTC. If this was kerfoot to Anaheim or Arizona I could see it but a chance to play with McDavid would probably prevent it.

10-team list could be the 4 teams that had a ton of cap (Anaheim, Arizona, Buffalo, and Chicago) plus the other 6 Canadian teams.

Now if he doesn't mind playing in Edmonton he might not have bothered to put them on his list since they had limited cap space. If he absolutely doesn't want to play there, he would have put them on his list. Similarly, if there are other Canadian teams that he doesn't mind playing for or didn't think would acquire him (MTL had an abundance of upcoming UFA forwards and not much cap), he could've kept them off the list to block teams like Detroit, Seattle (assuming his list was submitted before the Bjorkstrand trade), or NJ (assuming he still does not want to play there).

His list is ultimately going to have places that he doesn't want to play for in any circumstance (due to personal preferences), teams that he doesn't want to play for because of their current contention status, and teams who can actually trade for him. There will be overlap, so the goal would be to be tactical in which teams he blocks so that he doesn't get traded without his approval.

honestly think kerfoot is being pretty heavily undervalued
a 5th and a 7th wouldnt even really get the phone picked up
hes a middle 6 forward whos defensively responsible and produces at about a .4ppg pace
like you said he can play any position at forward can pk and while snakebitten could also be on pp2 for a good amount of teams
dollar for dollar hes basically perfect for his contract

cant see a trade like that ever taking place for that low of value

There is very little chance Kerfoot is moved, and NO chance Leafs retain
