Dallas does not give up Johns and the 3rd overall pick in a trade, especially not if the only thing coming back important is Tanev

LMAO because two overpaid 35 year olds net you a top 10 player in the league? Got it.

In all honesty if Tavares had some truly elite wingers to play with he would be but he is still a top 10 centre in the league

Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Karlsson, McDavid, Price, Kane, Stamkos, Doughty, Burns. (Not necessarilly this order) I'll say hes a top 25 and we can argue all we want about top 10 though. Haha

So you drop two spots in the draft from 3rd to 5th overall and get a significantly better Dman and not take the trade? Dallas Star fans overrate their team the most out of all non-traditional hockey markets.

You can say DAL overrate their team, but if it's such a good deal for DAL why would VAN offer it? What makes Tanev so great? I'm still trying to figure out if he's this great d-man (or more likely VAN fans overrating their player). Never gotten more than 20 points or played more than 70 games? What makes him such an upgrade over Johns? Or as you put it, "significantly better"?

The bolded is the correct answer. Right now I put Nuck fans overvaluing Tanev in the same category as Sabres fans overvaluing Kane. He's a good defensemen, nothing franchise altering. He can log 20+ minutes a night, block a ton of shots and does an overall decent job at limiting teams chances. He's not great offensively, nor does he hit very much. He's a 2nd pairing shutdown d-man that could help cover up the holes of an OFD who likes to jump up on the rush.

Tavares is probably a top ten centre in the game. But he certainly isn't a top 10 player in the league. Next season whoever signs him will probably be hoping that he produces like he did earlier in his career., no the realism of guy in his late 20s his contract running into mid 30s.

thats what makes him non top ten. Look at Crosby, he is playing with bottom-six forwards. He is still raking it in. Same with McDavid. he plays w/ Patrick Maroon. A grinder/terrible offensive player. He makes him look good.

10 Forwards better than Tavares:

Sidney Crosby ; Connor McDavid ; Patrick Kane ; Steven Stamkos ; Evgeni Malkin ; Alexander Ovechkin ; Anze Kopitar ; Jonathon Toews ; Tyler Seguin ; Patrice Bergeron

That's not the point the point is unless Tanev is a complete liability, even a 20 point difference for an excellent shutdown D is more than enough to only move down 2 spots in an already weak draft.
