Two potential trades

Description
Trade #1: According to David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod), Edmonton is looking to swap Jesse Puljujarvi for another bottom-six forward. There have also been rumors linking Edmonton to Sam Lafferty. You can connect the dots…

Why it makes sense for Edmonton: Lafferty is versatile, a hard worker, and cheap. He would save them nearly $2 million in cap space and is signed for only $1.15 million next season. Not to mention that he is currently out-producing Puljujarvi on team that scores 40% less.

Why it makes sense for Chicago: Puljujarvi is an obvious change of scenery candidate. His underlying numbers have always been solid. He is also a good skater for his size and forechecks well, two things Chicago values. Cap space won’t be an issue for Chicago and they can give Puljujarvi top-six minutes after the trade deadline.

Trade #2: According to Kevin Weekes (@KevinWeekes), Ottawa is “willing to move a high draft pick” to accommodate a Nikita Zaitsev trade.

Why it makes sense for Ottawa: Dorion has to believe that Ottawa will be a playoff team by the 24-25 season. That means the pick going to Chicago would be in the second-half of the first round. The potential sale of the team also complicates the Zaitsev situation.

Why it makes sense for Chicago: Money isn’t an issue for Chicago. They are in the midst of a full-blown rebuild and are stockpiling as many future draft picks as they can. There is no reason for them to *not* make this trade.

You say you can give Puljujarvi top 6 minutes in the description but then put him on 3rd line…

I can imagine Ottawa wanting to move on from Zaitsev so badly they give someone a 1st and get nothing in return. Zaitsev + 1st for Mitchell

1st trade, IMO, Lafferty has more value right now as he is extremely cheap in terms of cap hit for what he brings to the ice and is signed for another season. JP for $3m isn't worth his cap hit as of now.

2nd trade, I highly highly doubt it takes a 1st to move Zaits...more like a 2nd.

Perhaps a better trade is...

Ottawa gets = Murphy, Lafferty
Chicago gets = Zaits, 1st, JP, 3rd

After the trade deadline. That should open up some spots in the top-six. I'd personally start him with Toews, but the coaching staff seems to like Toews and Raddysh together.

I'd be fine with moving Mitchell, but I'm also not very high on him. I think Ottawa is pretty desperate to move him. They won't buy him out due to the ownership situation. They were also willing to trade from #7OA to #16OA just to get rid of Murray's contract.

Couldn't Ottawa just buyout Zaitsev this summer and keep the 1st?

I agree Lafferty has more value now. I'm just not sure what you could realistically get in a trade for him. Would the FO rather have *another* 3rd round pick or take a chance on someone like Puljujarvi?

A first for Zaitsev may be a bit much. But I also think that it will take more than a second to move his contract. New York had to trade 2 seconds (one was a conditional 2nd/3rd) to get rid of Nemeth, who only had a $2.5 million cap hit. That would be the starting point, in my opinion.

I've heard a few reputable people say that Ottawa doesn't want to add any more dead money to their expense sheet while they are trying to sell the team. I think that is why a buyout is off the table and they're trying to trade him.

The Zaitsev NTC probably complicates things here. Doubt he would waive to come here. I have also seen Friedman recently link Mccabe to EDM. I wonder if a Mccabe+Lafferty for JP+ deal is in the works

I don't watch JP a lot but I think his situation is similar to Kubalik last year. His QO will be significant and his play this year hasn't backed that up. So it is a risk. Hawks won't have cap issues but why would you risk $3+ mil that he can play better without McDavid than with him?

Out of curiosity, why do you think Zaitsev would not waive? Yes it's a glorified AHL roster, but I doubt any contenders would take him. Chicago is a pretty nice place to be rich and he would get NHL ice time.

Very good point. I felt like the moves made last offseason were more about changing the team's style of play. Hence why they signed Domi and Athanasiou for similar amounts as Kubalik and Strome. Puljujarvi seems to fit the mold of what the new FO is looking for. But his QO could definitely be a deterrent.
