Trade Deadline Moves

Created by: Leafs2020_21
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 9, 2023
Published: Jan. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Obviously, this is all just for fun and I have some rationale behind my ideas that some/most will not agree with.

This is an all-in scenario that also takes the Matthews extension into consideration. If he does not sign in the summer, he is traded for the most assets available -- none of this letting him walk for free.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Meier, Timo ($3,000,000 retained)
SJS
  1. Robertson, Nicholas
  2. 2023 5th round pick (TOR)
  3. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
The 5th is for salary retention. I think this is a decent deal for both sides as San Jose gets a first and a prospect toward their rebuild.
2.
TOR
  1. Horvat, Bo ($2,750,000 retained)
  2. Schenn, Luke
VAN
  1. Anderson, Joey
  2. Kerfoot, Alexander
  3. Niemelä, Topi
  4. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
  5. 2023 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
If we can't resign Matthews in the summer (which is the ideal situation), use that money to resign Meier and Horvat and retool on the fly. Prospects and picks for Matthews to NYC or LA would be my assumption in this scenario.

Not a chance that's enough for Meier, 50% retained elite forward who's an RFA - would at least be the same return as the Debrincat trade

Timo should be getting the Horvat return. Not nearly enough for the Sharks to justify getting rid of him here.

That's also a massive overpay for Horvat who will be a UFA Rental and is playing well above the level he's ever played in his career, so it's likely his game will come back to earth, especially when put into a completely new system.

you're giving up way way more for a Horvat who isnt near as good as Meier, and Meier has RFA control. And if you get one you dont need the other

Robertson is not a top prospect and by himself wouldn't make the Meier trade happen. Knies would do it, otherwise you have to add a combination of your other better prospects and pray SJ accepts quantity over quality.

There will be tons of teams after Timo Meier, And sorry Robertson a late 1st round pick and a 5th round pick doesn't get it done.

But Meir has a nightmare qualifying offer situation. His QO is 10 million dollars, so well you might have rfa control, the leafs definitely don’t have the room to sign him long term and a one year at his QO would be a non option. Similar situation to the Debrincat trade this off-season, his QO was the main offer the return seemed underwhelming

but the thing there is that since his QO is over 4 mill the leafs can walk, so it would be a UFA thing anyway. Either they pay more for a better player with more negotiation control at worst. I'd give 20% more to get Meier all other things equal anyway
