Buying Low On Conor Garland

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 11, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Conor Garland is not having the greatest year in terms of point production, but his advanced stats are still as great as ever and he would slot in perfectly at that 2LW spot. People are quick to write off Garland due to his size and his lack of point production this season, but these two points completely ignore the upside that Garland has as well as his track record of success. He is playing on a miserable Canucks team where he has not been given enough leeway to succeed. He has been seemingly ousted by new management, and is a complete waste in Vancouver. He is currently playing on a line with Dries and Lockwood, and has been essentially stapled to the third line all season. I guarantee if Garland ever dawns the Leaf uniform, he would quickly become a fan favourite. He is a top 6 LW that can not only produce (despite his totals this season), but his fantastic ability to play in transition and create offense without sacrificing defense should be tantalizing for a Leafs team looking so desperately for just that. He checks all the boxes for the Leafs, and with plenty of control left, he should be one of the Leafs main targets at the deadline. Personally, Garland is my number 1 target for the Leafs at the deadline. I love his game, his contract, and the fit. Dubas has tried for him before, so why not try again?

Canucks probably accept that. Would hate to see Garland get traded but I feel like it’s inevitable

Do the Leafs have room for his contract n 2 years when Matthews, Nylander, Sandin and Liljegren come up? Next year when Bunting is up (who probably gets a number close to Garlands). I’m not sure it’s a move Dubas can make

It's painful to see him be so misused in Vancouver because he was lights out for them last year. It would be a real shame to see the only redeeming part of the OEL trade go.

Subtract Holl's 2 mil and Kerfoot's 3.5 mil from the equation and there should be room aplenty. Plus we will probably see Samsonov's signing rights get moved at the draft considering his inevitably large pay cheque, so you replace him with Woll at 766k and you've got another 1.1 mil to play with. I think it can be done

I’d hate to see Garland get traded with his value so low but at this point I think it’s fair. Doesn’t mean I like it

Cap should also potentially be jumping enough to make it less painful. And, weirdly enough, the fact that Matthews already makes a ton of money means his extension probably will affect payroll the same way most other players' do - like, you could give him a $14M AAV and it'll only eat up an extra $2.4M - or about $250K more than Mat Barzal's increase against the Islanders' cap on his extension.

I think this would be super smart for the leafs, and I would not put it past the canucks management to accept this, but given the price that they payed for Garland pretty recently I feel like they'd be unwilling to sell him at such a low price for that reason. Also, canucks management has made it clear that they are not looking for a rebuild, and still believe they can compete for the playoffs this year, so I don't really see them as true sellers even if they should be.

Yeah, I just see bigger jumps for Nylander Sandin and Liljegren. Caps going up which is great, but last time we thought it was going up significantly… it didn’t lol. Don’t hate the idea of Garland, just unsure if it can work

In my mind, it actually seemed like a worse situation than it actually was. Nylander is almost certainly going to price himself out, given that the most a player of his caliber is typically worth is around 8.5 mil. Anything more than that and the Leafs pass. Sandin and Liljegren may be tricky, but I think it can be sorted out. I explored how the Leafs roster may look next year with the hypothetical acquisition of Garland, and it's actually not so bad; https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3855628

👍 Garland would make an awesome addition not only this year but for multiple playoff runs. Especially IF the Leafs are unable to keep Nylander, now you have an in-house replacement.

Engvall and Kampf are glued at the hip, have to believe moving Kerfoot makes more sense not only due to salary (allows them to make another move) but stylistically before Kerfoot Kampf Engvall became the new 3rd line, ZAR Kampf Engvall was Keefe’s most used line in shutting down games.

I also feel like hell would freeze over lol before Kerfoot or Engvall is trade by Kyle. After Bunting Matthews Nylander, the line of Kerfoot Kampf Engvall plays the 2nd most mins at 5 on 5.

But boy oh boy:
Bunting Mathews Nylander
Garland Tavares Marner
Robertson Holmberg Jarnkrok
Bonino Kampf Engvall

Rielly Gudas
Giordano Brodie
Sandin Liljgren
