That trade absolutely cripples STLs chances of doing a retool as opposed to a rebuild. Im not particularly high on Middlestadt, and there isn't a massive need for him here. Parayko is our best defensemen, if he's not he's a clear cut 2nd best defenseman behind Faulk. Both play very valuable roles. The main issue at the moment is our defensive prospect pool is nonexistent. Our forward Pool is actually pretty solid. moving Parayko without getting a couple high probability NHL defensemen in return along with draft capitol doesn't make any sense for the blues.
That 2nd is a nice 2nd, but we aren't finding any defensemen at 35 or so that are going to bridge the gap. Nor do we have any defensemen in the system to forsee the gap being bridged.
Regardless of what some posters opinion of Parayko's contract is or not, he is a vital piece of our core going forward unless he's replaced with another defensemen. If we're retooling he's staying, if we aren't selling he's staying, if we're full fledged rebuilding, he's one of the last players to go. 6.5m AAV for the role he plays is currently a good contract. I don't disagree that there could be some down years towards the end, but Parayko has never been an overly physical defenseman so the general downswing later in a career due to wear and tear probably isn't as applicable. But he does play a boatload of hard minutes and his high end skating for his size is a major factor of his game. If his speed starts to go that contract starts looking worse. Nonetheless, the notion that he's a negative value or a very low value asset may hold true in the eyes of someone looking at hypothetically acquiring him. But to the Blues as constructed, he's more or less a pillar of our defense.
