23-24 Meier w extension

Created by: BTW8892
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 17, 2023
Published: Jan. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming there is legitimate smoke between the Rangers and Sharks about Meier, it's not totally impossible to fit him into the long-term plans with an extension.

Barclay Goodrow doesn't necessarily have to be included in the Meier deal, but he would essentially be a straight cap dump over the summer. For the purpose of this, I just included him to shed the immediate cap space. The only downside to this idea is bridging Miller, thus potentially making him more expensive in two years. That being said, the Rangers would be in a much better spot cap wise in 2025-26 and with expected cap increases, it shouldn't be much of an issue getting Miller locked up.

Take out lafreniere then maybe because rentals don't pull a first overall pick... even if he's struggling

Rentals don’t pull a 1st? Where have you been the past 5 years? Sharks aren’t taking a cap dump in Goodrow back, cost a 1st to move him alone

Losing the Goodrow cap hit is the key to pulling this off. But NYR cap isssues are not SJ's problem. Maybe if a 3rd team is involved (BUF)?? Even still probably a moot point. Paying Meier 9M would still make it real difficult to extend Miller and Chytil (both are low balled by about 1M each in this lineup). And Goodrow is really valued by the front office and coach...if he were to be moved it would be over the summer- not during a playoff push.

As I explained in the description, Goodrow was simply included in that deal as a means to get rid of the salary. The assumption was also that Goodrow would be dumped in the summer and kept for the current run.

I'm glad both of you paid attention to the actual breakdown and read through it. This whole thing was put together under the assumption that Meier is traded with an extension to see how the numbers broke down. Again, Goodrow was included just to see how everything worked out without his cap hit on the books.

I don't think it makes sense for the Sharks to take Goodrow...

Words have meanings. So there is a difference in 1st and 1st overall. Never said a rental can't pull a 1st.

Just meant to give a quick response to glarson…didn’t realize you’d already pretty much covered that in your desc….my bad….in any case, I still don’t think Meier is doable at 9M per. You,re about 2.5M below the Cap- but still light around 4 players on this roster…and both the Miller and Chytil deals each will probably be 1M more each. So unless there is a plan to unload one of either Kreider, Panarin, or Trouba (any of which might actually negate the need to move Goodrow), talk of Meier is really moot. And I highly doubt he’ll be dealt as a rental (not that they should consider high priced rentals anyway).

Spent 4 years with the oilers so this is pointless because I said within 3 years... next attempt

Erik Johnson (1oa) started playing for STL in 2007 and in 2010 he got traded traded to Colorado

Happened halfway through the 2010 season so this is pointless because he said within 3 years and this example technically happened 3 years and 3 months later

Without including Goodrow, NYR can't afford to extend Meier. And there's no way they'd trade Lafreniere in this deal without being able to extend Meier.

I mean Goodrow is a 1st to take that contract, and Meier>>>Laf. I don’t see why the sharks should lower their price on a guy they don’t even have to move because a team can’t afford him after this year, that’s their problem

Fair enough, I'm just pointing out that it can't happen without Goodrow. Instead of suggesting without Goodrow, a more realistic suggestion would be to add another 1st ?
