Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 17, 2023
Published: Jan. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Idk heard this might happen, would be hype ngl. With the salary cap going up a Karlsson deal might be a good idea for the oilers, they really need to improve and picks arent going to help this year or the next. The oilers would also have theyre top 6 forwards, top 4 defense, and goalie pairings locked up for a few years so dont need much cap space except for depth positions which they can fill with young and replacement level guys.

It's 18% for 3 1st round picks, not worthless players and lesser picks.

It was recently stated EK has the hardest contract in the league to move even at the level he’s playing. GMs know they can’t make trades for guys having a career at 32.. and you want 3 firsts with 18% retention on a guy who’s more likely to to regress to maybe 0.75ppg next season and even more likely to regress further and further each following season. Recency bias won’t be enough to get what you think he’s going to get.

I'm not the one asking for 3 1st for 18% retention.

Mike Grier wants 3 1st round picks or equivalent players for 18% on EK65. He either gets it. Or he keeps him awhile longer.

theres not really any teams with the cap space so san jose would have to take back contracts and idk if anyone is giving up 3 1st round picks

yeah idk what san jose should do, if they keep him i don't think it will help them long term and if they dump him it doesn't help anything either. Theyll have to find a prospect that makes it worthwhile

I agree on the 3 1st round picks, Grier had better eat close to 50% on EK65 if he wants anywhere close to getting 3 1st round picks.

Yep... EDM's just a tough trade partner on that front.

yea to me 25% a solid RD and a 1st and 2nd would be ideal. more than that is unreasonable.

i have to agree and last year the sharks would have jumped at moving him at 25% retention and a 2nd for future considerations so the 31sts is as ridiculous as the demand for chychrun

By wanting 3 1sts I think it's Griers way of saying he isn't trading him.

If Grier shopped this deal around, I'm sure another team beats it. I get that San Jose would be taking bad contracts back but this is a lot of nothing for a player that, even if he's only playing at 60% of what he's doing right now, would be top pair on most teams in the league. Barrie makes sense to send back, sure, but Foegele is an overpaid bottom-6 guy, Janmark is a guy that's spend half the year in the AHL, and Puljujarvi is a full on reclamation project at this point. I think you need to throw *something* else with some value in here for it to be something the Sharks jump at.

I think the "three 1sts" is a bit much to ask, but I also think that other teams would be willing to pay more than this if they wanted to get Karlsson.

Yeah I agree, those players are in the deal to fit ek65 under the cap and Edmonton in my opinion could give more picks to make a deal happen. Question is whose more desperate than Edmonton rn, and should San Jose do whatever it takes to get the contract off the books now so in 5 years it doesn't **** them over
