Why not? Guy is a 24yr old right shot RW that is 6'4 can throw the body and in his previous two season was playing at a 20/20 pace. His confidence in EDM is shot and has wanted out of EDM before. Have him come to Boston and let him play 4RW. Monty has done a good job of helping younger guys find their game and I'm confident he could do with JP as well.

Look at the roster. It works. Don’t really want to disrupt it for a reclamation project

Disrupt what? The 4RW spot that's been a revolving door all season long? I'd hardly call Puljujarvi a "reclamation project" when in his previous two season he was playing at a 20/20 pace.

Is Puljujarvi an upgrade over Smith? Yes
Is Puljujarvi an upgrade over Greer? Yes

In that role…maybe? Maybe not.

20/20 pace? Over the last two seasons in 110 games he has 18 goals and 28 assists

That’s a 13 per 82 pace

I said is previous two seasons, which would indicate full seasons. You're not even looking at two seasons, you're looking at 1.5 seasons. If you look at his last two FULL seasons, (so the '20-'21 and '21-'22 season) he had 29G/32A in 120GP. That comes out to a 20G/22A pace for 82 games.

Ya, what he’s doing now is kind of more important

Yes and no. Quick look at his numbers and his TOI is down 20% over his previous two season with EDM. I also see his S% is down roughly 45% from his previous two years and he having the worst S% season since his rookie year. He's also seen his deployment change from the previous two years with him getting less offensive zone starts. Then you add in his comments about basically having no confidence and here we are. So yes its important what he's doing, but so is what he's done in the previous few years. Is the Puljujarvi we see right now the real Puljujarvi or is he more the 20/20 guy from the previous two season.

DeBrusk is a perfect example of this. '20-'21 season DeBrusk puts up a career worst 14pts, but the track record before had him at 35pts, 42pts & 43pts. The year after his career worst season, he put up 42pts and this season has been playing at an insane (for him) fringe 70pt pace.

Why? Because why keep Craig Smith? Why keep him just to keep him? Trade for equivalent value, albeit it higher upside with Puljujarvi

How does he make this team better. He’d likely be a $3m scratch.

Good job

So keep the current $3M scratch? Makes no sense. Great job.. no trade it for something my of equivalence and let’s see if the change of scenery can help spark something. If not, you traded $3M for $3M and it all becomes a moot point. So idc what you say, I - along with most Bs fans - would do this in a heart beat. ONLY if you keep him on the 4th line RW. If not, then idk. Again, why keep Smith? Shake that up and see if the secondary and tertiary scoring can contribute come April May June

He’s not a fourth line style player. Ruins that lines identity.

What do you consider a 4th line style of player? What would their strengths and weakness be?

Paramount is buying into the system, particularly on defense. Beyond that, tenacity, grit, face offs, blocking shots, energy, forechecking.

Bottom line is i don’t care if the fourth line never scores a goal. If they’re really hard to play against, and have great attention to detail regarding structure, that’s a win in my book.

Interestingly some of Puljujarvi best assets....throws the body, wins battles along the boards, good on the forecheck and disruptive when teams are trying to breakout of their own zone. Sounds like a guy who'd fit nicely into a 4th line role.

Nope. I’ve watched him. Lost half the time. No sense of structure. Easy to play against. Ya, he’s big, but he would turn the fourth line into a liability.

To be fair, just let Smitty go so he can get more playing time with a weaker team. Forget even bringing cap back in and get some late draft capital with his move (if you can even land that). He is a class player, team first and coaches player. Let him play more ice time somewhere else vs a random move that may disrupt the locker room dynamic.

How much do you actually I watch EDM though? Its funny how your go to response always is around watching. Nothing else matter, just what you see and your eyes are the be all end all in analysis.

Because there aren’t fancy numbers that are going to show attention to detail and structure. The stats are just lazy. What are we doing here? If all someone is going to do is regurgitate analytics, i don’t care. I can look up their, “opinion,” on a website. It’s just thoroughly uninteresting.

I try to watch every edmonton game. McDavid is must watch tv.

Yup. Fine with that. Ditch smith, accrue more cap space. But stay away from Puljujarvi.

He isn't that bad of a player - he will never live up to the 4th overall, but I am sure he can find a home in the NHL. I mean you talk about systems but Edmonton isn't really known for it being a systematic team, if they were, they would likely perform a little better in the playoffs.

Yeah I mean for sure - 100% get Smith more time with another team (assuming that is what he wants to). Bruins need the cap space to make off season moves, sign Pasta etc.
