Description

Never mind the term. This is just an exercise in looking at the outlines of the math involved, because I sense that a lot of people have leapt to the conclusion that Ottawa can't fit him in and will have to deal him away. I think that this is false, as this construction suggests. Of course, I could be mistaken about the four RFA signing prices I've imagined, but I don't think that I'm way off.

The trades seem realistic to me. Zaitsev dumped to Anaheim for a future second is a pretty popular idea on CapFriendly, and not just among Anaheim adherents. Sean Walker for one season is an excellent stop-gap measure, in part to shelter JBD and Thomson while they develop, and the cost of moving back about 40 slots from the second round into the third doesn't seem unfair, especially when you factor his low cap hit facilitating DeBrincat's retention into the equation. And there will be some excellent RhD prospects available to the Senators when they draft in the first round this summer.

If they could get DeBrincat to sign $8.2m they could have space to buy out Zaitsev and keep that pick.

They need to get a backup goalie, a 3rd pair LD and another bottom 6F. They need the cap space from Zaitsev. Also I’m very skeptical about Walker playing top 4

Thanks for the comment on JBD.

I'm not saying that Sean Walker is the RhD you're looking for . . . I'm saying that he's a good stopgap for a year while you bring some along and look for some others. Who else are you going to get cheaply (both in acquisition cost and cap hit) for one year who's a reasonable facsimile of a middle-pairing guy? The assumption is that you'd rather re-sign DeBrincat than keep Zaitsev and you'd rather have Walker play those minutes than Brannstrom on his off side or one of the semi-rookies.
