      Sure. Not 3 1sts and a 2nd. Just no.

Putting 1st round value on Casey Mittelstadt is a hell of a stretch. He's a fine player but he was drafted 6 years ago - unless you're in the habit of paying 1st rounders for 3Cs, I can't see any other GM placing that kind of value on him.

But if you wanna take him out I feel like San Jose would still be fine with Ostlund/1st/2nd - hell, they'll probably even take Buffalo's 2nd instead of Philly's and let you keep a solid asset there.

      Burakovsky <> 2nd + 3rd
      Bjorkstrand <> 3rd + 4th
      Kane <> 2nd + 4th + O'Regan
      DeBrincat <> 1st + 2nd + 3rd
      Hall <> 2nd
      Fiala <> 1st + Faber

In what world does Meier get more 1sts than all those guys combined?

He's 11th in his draft class in points.

that's a real apples and oranges kinda comp. Burns is 37 years old and still had 3x$8M left on a deal with an extremely strong NTC (he submits a list of 3 teams he's ok with a trade to every year and that's it) who was showing signs of decline (scoring at a 50 pts/82 GP pace from 2019-20 through last season after scoring at a 75 point pace the 4 seasons before). Any team that was going to give up premium assets for a player that old, with that big of a cap hit, would have been raked over the coals - if Burns had kept regressing down to a 40-45 point player, I'm sure Carolina would regret taking him on at even $5.3M through his age-39 season.

Meier's 26 years old, has been a hair under a PPG player going back to the beginning of last season (63-61-124 in 128 GP) and, even with an 8 year extension, will end that contract younger than Burns was at the time of his trade. Even if you don't want to pay it, there's a price point for players with that kind of age and production, and it's going to start with a 1st round pick and another strong asset.

Comparing 37 year old Burns who was making $8m for 3 more years and Meier who is 26/27 in his prime isn’t correct - not comparable.

You are correct Burns is a top pairing defenseman on the Canes, but what does that have to do with a trade with Meier?

Not specifically comparing the 2 players. But look at the trade market. That's what I am comparing.

Look at Patches. Traded for free.

      Teams don't have cap space.

Smart GMs are not giving up a ton of assets.

BUF has no reason to do this trade. ZERO.

Teams only need to make $3m-$6m in ‘cap space’ to make Meier work. There are quite a few teams who could make this work pretty easily. Comparing cap saving trade in the offseason to TDL deals isn’t going to land with good comparables.

Considering BUF - you say they have no reason to do this trade. Guess that’s one team out of the way for the services of a good play driving winger in the prime of his career.

Teams can make it work, but teams won't be giving up the equivalent of 3 1sts and a 2nd. I mean that is just crazy talk.

And teams need $10mm in cap space next year to fit him on top of it.

Burns is a top-pairing Dman on the 2nd best team in the league.

Pacioretty was a 1st line LW almost a PPG is entire time in Vegas and was a cap dump when traded ...

What people seem to always forget is that San Jose doesn’t have to move Meier. Trades like these should be expected or San Jose should just keep him. As a sharks fan I don’t mind these trades at all

Is Meier willing to sign a long-term deal with San Jose? There's a real possibility that he isn't. Therefore they are motivated to trade him, as there only option then would be to qualify him ($10M x 1) and sell him as a pending UFA next deadline. He'll be worth less as a pending UFA.

So they're going to get the best return for him right now and they know it. It's not their only option, but it's the best one. So you can't pretend they don't have any motivation to make a deal.

You are not listening, I said whoever trade for Meier gets him with an extension @ 8.5Mish for 8 years
The teams above HAVE the cap space to do it (NJ BUF CAR)
Casey Mittelstadt isn't worth more than a 3rd and I doubt he is worth a 3rd
Ok change PHI 2nd for VGK 2nd & call it a day
You can keep Casey and send Jost who has ZERO value since you claimed him via waivers
So the price for Meier would be two first round picks and a 2nd, which is fair for a top line winger in his prime and getting him for 8 years

I do think we’re interested in him, but i also don’t know that we’d wanna be involved in a bidding war either

Why would Meier sign for $8.5mm when he is due $10mm? I mean, maybe he takes less than his contract says. Would you?

Jost has value. We're a top 5 team in the league since acquiring him and Mitts plays on his line and is 4th in points, on his team, on a top-scoring team in the teague.

We just have zero need to do this trade. Zero.

      We'll take him for a 1st + 2nd + 3rd.

      Not 3 1sts and a 2nd.

He is not getting 10M long terms
Yes he can take the 10M for 1 year, but after that no one is giving him that much
So you can go to a contender right away and sign for big bucks long terms or stay with SJ for the reminder of the season, touch his 10M and have another boring year losing
      Up to the player

He's 11th in his draft class in points.

He's also had the 8th most GP of anyone in that draft class, so it's actually disappointing that he's that low. And just doing it on raw points is an odd way to do it - so, since Josh Norris is only 13th in points among 2017 draftees, does he have less trade value than Mittelstadt? Gabe Vilardi is 6 spots below Mittelstadt, and Timothy Liljegren is 20 spots down - I guess LA or the Leafs would add to a one-for-one deal there, right?

He's a 35-40 point guy making $2.5M. I'm not saying he's worthless, but saying he has 1st round value just because he was picked #8 in the draft 6 years ago is just some pretzel logic to me.

Were Vegas in cap trouble ? Yes
Is Pacioretty 26 yo & didn't get the memo
Does Pacioretty 26 yo and could be sign long terms ?
You have zero hockey knowledge, why are you still here

Drop PHI early 2nd for Vegas late 2nd

I reject your assertations on my hockey knowledge. Pretty mean if you ask me.

I've provided plenty of trade comparables.

      For me? Sure
Would that be enough to outbid other teams? Idk

Meier will get a good return- for sure
I just don’t know that we’ll be the team to pay it

      Casey or Jost
Drop PHI early 2nd for Vegas late 2nd
      Better ?

And FYI. I'm old enough to remember sweeping MTL 4-0 in 1998. (and the losses in the 80's)

Hopefully we're both good enough to be in the playoffs together again.

He is not getting 10M long terms

Why not? He's basically guaranteed $10mm for next year.

Huberdeau, Gaudreau, Tkachuk all signed for roughly $10mm. ANd they did that on a smaller cap and not in UFA. The cap will explode in 2024.

Meier has ZERO reason to sign for less than $10mm.[/quote]

Is SJ in cap trouble? Yes.

I reject your assertations on my hockey knowledge. Pretty mean if you ask me.

I've provided plenty of trade comparables.

No SJ aren't in cap trouble and can just qualify him
Vegas had to trade Pacio before the season start
The trades you are comparing doesn't make sense
The only one that make sense is the LAK one
Only good comparable, and Faber is a really good RHD prospect

That explain why you don't have hockey knowledge, you can stop commenting
Let's say we agree that we disagree

      SJS isn't in cap trouble?

They are a terrible team. They have $16mm in cap space next year with Meier due $10mm and only 16 players signed.

If they give Meier his QO, that leaves them with $6mm, for 7 players to sign.

SJS is in a world of trouble.

BUF has no desire to help them out.

They have motivation to make the deal. But other teams know exactly what you said. Meier can simply take a 1yr $10mm QO and walk to UFA. He's not worth 3 1sts and a 2nd.

Casey Mittelstadt isn't worth more than a 3rd and I doubt he is worth a 3rd

      Mitts 28 pts
      Dach 32 pts

Guess you guys wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overpaid for Dach. Should have given a 3rd for him instead of a 1st and a 3rd + pay him $862,000 more.
