Updated lists of players Leafs should and should not trade for

Created by: Brad_Treliving
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 2, 2023
Published: Feb. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Players Leafs should not trade for:

1. Connor Garland (Another version of Alex Kerfoot but worse and with too much term. Way too undersized and small)

2. Max Domi (same reason as Garland. Not tough at all)

3. Sam Lafferty (won't even be the 13th forward on this team)

4. Tyler Bertuzzi (injured, UFA, and doesn't have the production he once did. Don't throw assets at a cap dump)

5. Vladislav Gavrikov (way too much in terms of costs to acquire. Reported ask is 1st + 3rd)

6. Patrick Kane (Opposite of what this team needs)

7. Frank Vatrano (An overpaid version of Alex Kerfoot, not a needle mover. Also has lots of term that I don't want to commit to)

8. Andreas Athanasious (Not a needle mover. Don't waste assets).

9. Timo Meier (love this player to every bit. The cost will be expensive and in any deal to acquire Meier will have to include Matthew Knies. In few years time, we will all be crying and complaining when we no longer have Timo Meier (since we can't afford to keep him) while Knies gets 40+ points on his ELC for the SJS)

Players Leafs should trade for (if available):

1. Ryan O'Reilly (Stanley Cup pedigree, big body, and with a mentality of doing whatever it takes in the playoffs (even with a torn ACL or some crucial injury). Out of all players in the rental market, he has the highest chance of re-signing)

2. Ivan Barbashev (Good player, won a cup, and not the best option but can do the job. I'm on the fence with this player)

3. Anthony Beauvillier (His offseason production may have not been as good this season, but when the games matter the most or in the playoffs, he shows up. An actual playoff performer and that's what this team needs)

4. Sam Bennett (Wanted this guy since the day he was made available by CGY. I doubt Florida will move him, especially to a rival, but just someone that I want)

5. Luke Schenn (The only reason why I want him is the fact that we don't have to go up against him in the playoffs since Tampa is highly interested in the player. He will be leading the team in hits which is exactly what we need. Massive upgrade over Justin Holl but some see differently)

6. Jake McCabe (He has been really good this year and may be a massive upgrade over Justin Holl. For a 2nd + B level prospect, it may be a risk taking but I could see why the Leafs may not want to do it)

Agreed, they should go after O'Reilly/Barbashev and Schenn.

What do people see in Garland? O'Reilly and Barbashev would be a huge win

You nailed it EXACTLY on the head. All of these guys would make a ton of sense.

ROR, based off acquisition cost alone should be the number one target. For those who are saying he is the next Nick Foligno, that take couldn't be more off base due to the fact ROR KNOWS how to win in the playoffs and was the Conn Smythe winner in 2019. He was St. Louis best player last season in the playoffs and can play both on the wing and C, and I cant imagine will cost as much as Meier, who you said and I agree with - Is the PERFECT add, but the cost to retain him wont work and its not worth the assets they have to give up to get him unless you are doubling down on your core 4 philosophy, and even then, there are teams out there that will out bid the Leafs. I love watching Barbashev and Bennett, those guys would give the Leafs some legit jam on the 3rd line, with the ability to play higher up the lineup.

In terms of players who I believe make sense that they should target that you didn't list:
1- Travis Konecny- Also a guy who is both cost controllable and would add an element the Leafs could use more of, he is quite good.
2- Adam Henrique- An Ontario boy, someone who wouldn't cost a ton to trade for relatively speaking, and is a good versatile forward who can score and play C and the wing. He is playing quite well on a bad Ducks team and is under contract until after next season. He fits in both on the second and third line, and is a the type of guy who seems like he could come in the clutch (IIRC he scored the conference winning goal for the Devils when he was a rookie).
3- Ryan Hartman- This years Blake Coleman, would be a perfect add, only issue is that Minnesota isn't moving him so yea.....
4- Boone Jenner- Same idea as Hartman just only thing is, there is no way Columbus is moving their Captain and no 1 C.
5- David Perron- I feel like for the right price (a 1st, a B prospect and salary filler) Detroit would move him. He was arguably St. Louis best player the last 2 years, and would come with one more year at an affordable 4.75M, and has the resume and stats of a big playoff performer. Only thing is I don't see how Stevie Y will trade him after just signing him.

In regards to the guys you mentioned who you wouldn't want -Garland at the right price would be a good add, he is having a bad season this year but is a legit top 6 forward and brings some snarl to his game, also plays the way Dubas and Keefe like to play. He is much better than Kerfoot. Domi would also be a great add, a) he would look perfect in a Leafs jersey, and b) he is a big game player and I feel like the Leafs need guys like that.
Tyler Bertuzzi I firmly disagree on, and although, yes he has never made the playoffs, but his numbers in the playoffs in both junior and the AHL are terrific, and his style of play A) fits what the Leafs need and B) he is having a down year so the cost shouldnt be too high.

Damn I forgot about Travis Konecny, he would be a really good add. The problem I see with Garland is that he has $4M x 3Y contract that we will have to eat up. Even Friedman said there are concerns on how they will fit Bunting without knowing the future of Matthews. If we can't fit Bunting for $4M, we won't be able to afford Garland. Also, acquiring Garland means saying bye to Bunting and I don't want to do that

I'm suprised at how much I agree with this. I have only a few critiques.

1. I wouldn't mind Garland if it is a swap centred around Kerfoot and only involves a very small add, because I think he has higher upside. Otherwise I agree, I'd pass.

2. Timo would be such a perfect fit on this team, I don't care how much he costs just do it lol. But you are right in that after this year he doesn't make sense

3. Leafs don't really need bottom pairing guys on d, I'd take Schenn if it's a depth move and it's for a 4th round pick or less, but not paying more than that.

But I agree with everything else, good job.

I agree with all this.

I don't want to pay a lot for Bertuzzi but if he comes at a reasonable price I'd love to have him, though detriot probably doesn't want to trade in division.
