Man is that tight

Created by: swinny
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 28, 2022
Published: Feb. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
To keep it together, Sens carry a 20 man roster.

Luckily, they have some.forward depth in case of injuries in Belleville, and Thompson is the defacto #7D even though he is there too.

Jensen should provided an excellent presence for Sanderson. Opted for a short term vet thinking Bernard-Docker works his way up.

Ritchie signing is a cheap 4th line option. Quite effective.

Hill is the guy I go with for tandem tending over the next couple years with Forsberg. Not sold Sōgaard is ready. Let him marinate.

With the cap going up apparently in 24-25, the Sens should have some wiggle room.

  1. 2023 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
TDL 23 Motte 50% retained.

As much as Motte is a fabulous defensive player, expiring contracts must go. With Norris on the shelf for the rest of the year, any hope of making the playoffs are pretty much gone. Set up 23-24.
EDM
    TDL 23 - Motte, 50% retained.

Oilers get an excellent 4th line player here that can play more than 10 minutes a night. Since Holland recognizes Edmonton's need to shore up defensively, this is a cheap make sense move for them.

    1. 2023 2nd round pick (BUF)
    Additional Details:
    TDL 23 - Holden

Holden does hold a 10 team no trade list, and out of the teams in the hunt, Buffalo is the team that would have an immediate spot for him. I can't see him waiving to be 7th D, which would be the case for most the clubs that are legit Cup threats. An improved blueline males Buffalo much more dangerous, and I have to think Holden would see that.
    BUF
      TDL - Holden

Sabres are very much in the playoffs hunt, but their bottom pairing has not been reliable. Holden more than upgrades Bryson. Very under rated D, and a much needed vet presence on the Sabres back end.

Totally worth a middle puck in the 2nd round, but would settle for the Vegas pick.

      1. Fagemo, Samuel [RFA Rights]
      Additional Details:
      TDL 23 - Talbot 50% retained

One has to think the Kings will be looking to upgrade their goaltending. I mean, I wouldn't feel that warm.and fuzzy running with Quick and Copley (granted it seems to be working).

But, since I see the Kings set up for a possible long run, I am.one to think Blake just maybe looking for something more stable, which Talbot is..... putting up decent numbers behind a much worse team. Behind a much better LA defense, Talbot could be the guy that leads them. The west is really up for grabs.

Now, I get that Fagemo is a helluva good looking prospect, but this is a case of a finite goalie market and a pay to play scenario.

So, the draft puck becomes conditional. If LA fails.to make the conference finals, they recieve the 2nd.

To make it to the final 4 at the cost of Fagemo I think is a place Blake goes. Failing that objective, I beleive Blake would want a safe guard in play, after all, LA is making the playoffs with what they have. Talbot is a push.

Further, we have seen different plays for Demko, but I am not so sure the Kings are ready to give up on Peterson yet. They have a guy long term there, and where Peterson is right now, to flip him for a goalie with term will cost LA more.

      That hasn't been Blake's style.

      Hence, Talbot is the fit.

      1. 2023 2nd round pick (BUF)
      Additional Details:
      TDL 23 - Talbot 50% retained

Ottawa probably doesn't bring Talbot back, but he has been awefully good for them. As stated above, the deadline goalie market is finite, so there is a premium on landing a good one.

Fagemo is a very good prospect. One that looks NHL ready in a 3rd line role. The reason for the target over a puck is simple: he will play and he is cheap.

Again, as stated above, I think for this to work, the conditional pick has to be in play, otherwise I frankly don't see Blake pulling the trigger; even though an upgrade in net is needed imo.

      1. Zaitsev, Nikita
      2. 2023 2nd round pick (OTT)
      Additional Details:
The long rumored Zaitsev move to Arizona finally happens to help them reach basement.

Yotes get a 2nd, we'll, because they should for taking him on for the last year.
      5.

        TDL 23 - Brassard

Jets get a veteran 4th line guy..... which given the flux on that unit, I think they may need.
        WPG
          TDL 23 - Brassard

Brassard goes to a team with a real shot. Should see 4th line minutes there, possibly 3rd depending on what else the Jets do.

ZERO chance the Sabres even consider that

1- we aren’t gonna trade for an almost 36yr old rental
2- we sure wouldn’t give up a 2nd for him if we were gonna

Actually it kind if is when Giordano landed Seattle a pair of 2nds and a 3rd (which I would say the 3rd was Colin Blackwell).

So a single 2nd for a guy of Holden's ability is off base how?

          But I digress.

          He isn't a dump.

He is being moved to a team better positioned to make the playoffs, and is simply better than your current option Bryson.

          How is that a dump?

At the time of that deal, Giordano was playing 18 minutes a game. And was brought in as a 3rd pairing guy.

I don't see this as a stretch at all.

I see it as you looking at his age over his ability.

A pick that is likely like 50th overall (and I said Inwould settle for the Veges pick, so that moves further back) just isn't a stretch.

Holden has long been an under appreciated commodity.

          To calm things down here i think we can all agree that the sabres dont become a stanely cup favorite by adding holden. So they're not going to invest anything in a deal that doesnt;
1.Improve them long term (no rentals over over 35)
2.Add assets that could be used to improve the team when they are ready to make a run.
This deal adds an aged player, who isnt getting them over a hump and depletes assets. It has nothing to do with holdens value. He just isnt what we'd be shopping for.

1- comparing a career AVERAGE defenseman to a guy who won the Norris a couple years before the trade u speak of is pretty ridiculous

2- even if Holden actually was worth a 2nd (he’s not- NO 3rd pair defenseman is),
          The Sabres….
          are NOT…..
          trading for…..

I'm a Sens fan and while I love Nick Holden, a second is lunacy. He doesn't even crack the lineup on lots of true contenders and if we're lucky we get a 5th for him.
