Description
The Florida Panthers are in a tough spot. Due to previous trades they lack a first round draft pick for the next three years, but are on the playoff bubble right now. There are limited means for them to improve the roster at the trade deadline, and they also have Anthony Duclair about to return from LTIR, but as of now don't have the cap space to activate him.

Pending UFA Gustav Nyquist was expected to be one of the Blue Jackets' top trade chips, but an injury has knocked him out through the rest of the regular season. However, he is expected to return for the playoffs, so a team could still trade for him with an eye towards stashing him on LTIR in advance of having him for a potential playoff run. I'm not an LTIR expert, but apparently this is possible, so long as the team acquiring Nyquist has the cap space to carry him on their roster at the time of the trade, before moving him to LTIR. Florida could be such a team, as trading for Nyquist could allow them to activate Duclair and carry a full 23 man roster, while adding another solid player for the playoffs if they make it that far.

Here's how this might work:

1. Florida re-assigns Alex Lyon to the AHL after Bobrovsky is healthy. This raises their available LTIR bonus pool to a little over $3.5M. If Bobrovsky isn't healthy, they can send down a depth forward instead.

2. Florida trades for Nyquist at a reduced cap hit of $3.5M.

3. Florida places Nyquist on LTIR and activates Duclair. Nyquist and Hörnqvist would stay on LTIR through the regular season before returning for the playoffs, should the Panthers qualify.

As always, constructive feedback is appreciated. Cheers!

I don’t know if your math are spot on, but the trade is fair if everything fits under the cap

It's a little short. Our target was a 2nd prior to the injury, so if he plays most of one's playoff games, that's what we'd expect (since he was being sold as a playoff rental).

Shoulder injuries are very unpredictable when it comes to recovery time.
At this point, the Jackets should definitely sell for the highest offer, since the chances of re-signing him are 0%.
The Jackets have lost a bit of leverage on Nyquist as to what they would receive in return.
With retention of salary, they could probably get a 3rd, and with no retention maybe a 4th? I would be surprised if they can get a 2nd for him.

I'd have been shocked if they got a second for him before the injury. This feels fair to me.
