KK can still improve to be a Danault type of player. miller has peaked and won’t ever hit the numbers he did last year ever again. In terms of cap structure, the Canes keeping KK, who is a perfect systemic fit on the Canes, is a much better move than acquiring Miller, who is one of the worst systemic fits imaginable. The Canes had no interest in Miller before he signed that extension, and they have even less interest now that he had it. Besides, the whole acquiring Miller ideology goes against the entirety of the Canes FO philosophy. The Canes have shown they aren’t afraid of letting players walk instead of giving them contracts into their mid to late 30s. Trocheck, Hamilton, and Niederreiter are perfect examples of this methodology. A player would have to be a massive game breaker or a perfect systemic fit for the Canes to go against their own philosophy. Miller is neither of those.
Better to bet on a 22 year old in KK to improve and keep the first in a deep draft rather than waste prone assets on a player who is a terrible systemic fit and would hurt both team chemistry and the cap structure more than help it. And in the absolute worst case scenario, KK has a feasible buyout penalty, whereas Miller is buyout proof.
