Description
Meier trade is under the assumption whoever trades for him at the deadline doesn't strike a deal with him and the Devils pay the 3rd (or whatever - a 4th or 5th) to negotiate prior to FA and get an 8th year. With Jack and Hischer on great deals, a slight overpay perhaps on Meier is fine. Let Graves and Severson walk, idk if thats what yall want but Nemec and L. Hughes look solid (and cheap).

If someone is signed to a 2 year deal the AAV was a shot in the dark, chirp if you must

Love what the Devils have built as a Habs fan dreaming of the same

If a deal cannot be reached now, yeah by all means I’d wanna go back and see what can be done after the season. I don’t think it can be as simple as a third round pick however. Although the qualifying offer of 10 million might not be the most attractive thing in the world, it still gives team control until after 2023/2024 season. So for that reason you’re still going to have to pay a decent price to make a trade. Although, it would definitely would be less than the ask is right now.

Well first, with rfa status I think it would take more than a third. Also, what did zetterlund and bahl do to earn that kind of money

The Devils wouldn't be able to give Meier an 8 year deal if they trade for his rights after the trade deadline.

Gave Zetterlund 3m bc his name sounds like Zetterberg so I figure hes nasty, but seriously idk what Devils players are worth outside the top end, said so in the description lol, good pt about RFA, it would take more than a 3

Thats a good point, would be more than a 3. Anyone willing to trade the assets necessary to acquire him would be willing to eat the 1 year/$10m QO if it came to that

Exactly. That is where it gets tricky for SJ. Only so many teams can/will eat that QO, but I think you’re still talking first round pick going to SJ. I have no clue how Meier feels about re-signing in SJ, but going into the summer with him still on their roster may not be in their best interest.

They also run into the possibility he tells them he doesn’t want to sign long term, they don’t give the QO, and he’s an UFA this summer. Unlikely but you don’t play around and lose a star player for nothing (I.E. Zach Parise). It can destroy your franchise for a decade.

In what drug addled world do you think a 3rd round pick gets Timo? Lay off the angel dust.

Unless it's Toronto or a team like that.

It's 100% certain that any team that goes after Timo Meier, Will already have a deal in place at the time they acquire him.

Read the description brother, in this scenario the Sharks have already traded Timo for a haul! Devils are grabbing him from that team if they dont agree to a contract but as other comments have pointed out thats very unlikely.

This is a tough one - for a team to care about his RFA status, they have to have $10M in room to offer him the QO.

So it was thought...but so far, San Jose has declined to allow anyone to speak with Meier's agent. So it sounds like there will not be a pre-set extension.

Only works if he is not given a qualifying offer...so would be three-day window where that could be possible.
