Meier vs DeBrincat

Created by: njlaforte

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 11, 2023
Published: Feb. 11, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
SJS
Meier will cost more then DeBrincat. Probably a 1st and two solid prospects (Heinola and Lucius).
    2.
    OTT
How much less will DeBrincat cost compared to Meier? 1st and a prospect? 1st and Pionk (who they seem to have an interest in)?

Meier will cost less than what Ottawa paid for DeBrincat without question because playoff teams dont have top 10 picks that often.

If you are talking about if both are available right now I imagine the cost is pretty close to identical. Cat has a stronger 2-way game and hasn't had the same quality of linemates due to the Norris injury

OTT wants a top 4 RD that is a actual top 4 RD in his 20s signed, SJS would be fine with futures as they should be rebuilding, dont think OTT and Jets are good trade partner for CAT, you would need Pionk more than Cat also Jets would need the assets to get a top 2 C when Dubois leaves.

If the Jets are spending these types of assets it needs to be on whoever is willing to sign long term.

I know many are in the camp that Chevy needs to go all in and I get that but a team based in Winnipeg just can't be laissez-faire with quality assets like 1st round picks and A-prospects.

I agree with most of this but IMO the Jets would be better off without Pionk on the roster.

The difference is San Jose wants future and Ottawa wants to make the playoffs. So they’d be 2 different type of trades. Ottawa doesn’t want a prospect and a 1st where as that’s what San Jose wants

I do think the whole “won’t get as much as Ottawa traded for Debrincat” is overblown. How often does a 7th overall get moved? Not often. Hell even if Nashville for example traded Kemell and a 1st for Meier , that’s probably still less than 7th overall . How many players would a team move 7th pick for ? Very very few. Of course no team is gonna give up a 7th overall level talent . If you’re talking 7th overall level talent or a little better, you’re talking about Brandt Clarke or Luke Hughes . Of course no team is giving that up. I don’t even think a team moves 7th pick for Juuse Saros if he was available

Then from the Jets what does the trade look like? I would have to think it includes Pionk since it's rumoured they have been scouting him all season.

Last I’ve seen is Pionk’s term and defensive ability is a liability more than an asset at this point. And he isn’t having the best season. And I don’t think the jets want to go into to the summer with 2 massive RFAs

Yes, Pionk is awful but he just needs a change of scenery, he is playing a little banged up so hopefully, this all-star break helped. In terms of the 2 RFA situation, PLD is as good as gone... So they would only have to deal with 1 RFA whether that be Meier or DeBrincat. The jets will trade PLD to MTL and hopefully, get Dach in the deal then we have that 2C spot filled again. And maybe that would entice DeBrincat to extend if his old teammate got traded here.

Thats the point is there is no contender outside of maybe New Jersey moving Holtz that can offer something comparable to "7th OA"

Exactly so in a way it’s not news . We all know they’re not moving Nemec or Hughes. So the next piece is Holtz. Holtz + mid D prospect + 2023 1st and one of Johnsson/Wood for cap makes a ton of sense
