Erik Karlsson you are an Oiler

Created by: ken_holland
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2023
Published: Feb. 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Benning, Matthew
  2. Karlsson, Erik ($4,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
It's quite a bit of retained salary but I'm not sure if San Jose finds a better package tbh. Benning would also be the perfect 3RD
SJS
  1. Barrie, Tyson
  2. Bourgault, Xavier
  3. Ceci, Cody
  4. Kesselring, Michael
  5. Schaefer, Reid
  6. 2023 1st round pick (EDM)
  7. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
  8. 2025 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
2 quality prospects in Bourgault and Schaefer, along with Kesselring who is likely to be a depth NHLer at the very least. Barrie and Ceci are for cap purposes, but Barrie will have enough value to flip for another mid-round pick.
2.
ARI
  1. Puljujärvi, Jesse
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (EDM)
  3. 2024 5th round pick (EDM)
3.
EDM
  1. Vrána, Jakub ($2,600,000 retained)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (DET)
  3. 2024 4th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
I'm not sure why Vrana was unclaimed on waivers, but I would pay a lot for someone with his goal-scoring pedigree at just over $2.5M. Detroit upgrades their 3rd and 4th to a 1st.
DET
  1. Foegele, Warren
  2. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)

Sharks seem to want Bouchard back in the deal which makes sense, especially if Benning goes back to you.

Also why do Ceci instead of Poolparty when you want to get rid of him anyways?

I mean paying all that for a 32 year old dman who's been hurt so much and still paying him 7.5 million is crazy. Go get Chychrun he'll cost half as much and be cheaper and younger.

Detroit isn't eating salary and Foegels deal, and giving up a 3rd and a 4th for a, at best, 20s pick.

Not a good deal for Detroit. Edmonton isn't going to get bailed out of their cap issues without overpaying.

Bouchard helps the Oilers in the short run though, unlike 1st round picks which are basically meaningless to McDavid and Draisaitl. I would prefer to keep Bouch no matter what.

Also I used Ceci just to make it 2 RHD for 2 RHD, nothing much to it. The deal works with Puljujarvi as well.

Chychrun might be 8 years younger, but his injury history rivals Karlsson's, might even be worse. He'll cost half in cap for 2 more years but the cost of acquisition is just as high if not higher, and he's not as good right now. Arz also wants Broberg or Holloway, two guys that Holland doesn't wat to give up.

Getting a Norris level defenseman probably pushes this team over the edge, and I think it's also what McDavid and Draisaitl want based on stuff I've been hearing from the Oilers media since the All-Star break. Chychrun would also work well, but Karlsson is just more exciting. Nothing much to it haha.

Would it work if I took out the 3rd/4th and added another prospect from Edmonton's side?

Detroit doesn't need any of Edmonton's prospects that would be available. Vrana is not worth Holloway, and Broberg is LD, so the only two prospects that have any substantial value aren't available or won't work for Detroit. Borgault would work too, but he is going in the other trade proposed. Detroit just doesn't need mid tier prospects at wing.

Sharks Pass - going to need to add Broberg or Bouchard to even get a response, especially with 4M retained. And Benning certainly isn't just a throw in

When it comes to guessing who's staying healthy I'll take the 24 year old over the 32 year old.

Over the last 7 years (Chychrun's career): Karlsson played 414 games vs Chychrun's 373 games. The fact that he is as frequently injured as a guy who is 8 years older suggests that when he gets to that age he's going to be done.

I rather take the higher-impact offensive player in Karlsson and keep Broberg (who seems to be solid defensively) over having Chychrun+Bouchard. Broberg also has 1-more year left on his ELC, so that should help them get by cap-wise for a bit.
