Final Deadline Add

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2023
Published: Feb. 18, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Add a physical DMan to add into our top 8. I like the option of having a guy like Schenn. Of course an upgrade over Holl would be nice, but that would be extremely expensive and not many would be available. This just gives another option for Keefe.

Vancouver would need to like Niemela a lot to make this trade. Early 2nd + Schenn for Niemela and a 6th. They would need to view him as a good prospect.

Thoughts?

They would need to like Niemela quite a bit. He is top 3 Leafs prospect and a RD.

I have him as an A- prospect. Which is like a late 1st rounder. But he is position specific and would in theory help them sooner than that 2nd round pick.

Then why would the leafs move him for a guy who wouldnt be a roster regular? They need cheap guys who can step in more than bottom pairing defenders

Schenn brings an element to their top 8 D that they don't have right now. Plus the Leafs get an early 2nd round pick from this (currently the Leafs best pick is a 3rd rounder this year. I can see Dubas trying to get a 2nd or better before or at the draft). Vancouver gets a nice RD prospect and a later pick.

Not a good match imo, Schenn will proably go for a 3rd+ okay RD prospect. Doesn't make much sense for Vancouver to give up a pick when they can use that and the one that they get for Schenn to try drafting their own guys.

Niemela is more valuable to the Leafs than that pick probably, they won't know what they will get, and there are other options that they can get for D-depth other than Schenn.

I assume Schenn will get the Kulak treatment of 2nd + 7th. Time will tell! But I understand. I was just trying to make a different/creative trade. I would consider this if I were Vancouver (but they would need to like Niemela)

Schenn brings nothing to the leafs that jordie benn doesn't.
He is a slow, 6th defender with no puck skills that gets caved in by middling competition. He has minimal value on his best day.
Topi is worth more than the 2nd and the downgrade isnt worth schenn or a 6th. He simply isnt needed

I feel for the Leafs they could probably move Engvall for a D-man if they need.
