With flat cap for few more years thanks to Ballys

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2024-25 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2023
Published: Feb. 18, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Right now, the league’s estimates for cap are the following.

2022-23: $82.5m
2023-24: $83.5m
2024-25: $87.5m
2025-26: $92.0m

With Bally’s defaulting on their latest debt payment and heading for bankruptcy, there will likely be a drop in hockey related revenues, which certainly put these cap projections in jeopardy. Compliance buy-outs are an option, but only if the upper limit declines (ie, we go from 82.5 this year to 81.0 next year).

New cap guidance could look like this:

2022-23: $82.5m
2023-24: $83.0m
2024-25: $83.5m
2025-26: $84.0m

Which means CBOs may not be available. This will likely ding the growth in players’ AAV figures for at least the next year.

---------

With a tighter cap than expected, NJD could still add a $7m winger and probably avoid any trouble. But it may make adding a $9m winger more of a risk.

Half a million rise from year to year would be very sad.

If there is a flat cap I think they will be fine. They have lots of flexibility for this offseason and hopefully we will have clearer answers by then. Plus most of the contracts you signed here are probably above what they are going to get. A flat cap would probably only benefit them because the other contending teams will feel it much more.

Would be worst case scenario. League would probably be better off with lower cap next year, along with compliance buy-outs, than with minimal increases.

Either way, doesn’t look like we will get big increases in next couple of years.

I hope the cap doesn't grow much, these GMs should have to live with the messes they create for themselves.

Totally. And since most of these deals will be done after cap is decided, they may not be as high.

Hard to put this one on GMs though. Especially ones in areas with healthy regional sports networks.

Could stink to be a team in one of these 12 markets though. The financial hit will be shared by the league. But imagine having to watch all 82 games on ESPN+.

I predict more of big market vs small market battle coming, then a reopening of CBA…with eventually some iteration of a soft cap (or loosening of cap for unforeseen events).

To force that, big market owners could push for a lower cap in 2023-24.

It’s all very interesting.

I was watching the Let's go Devils podcast and they were talking about the subject. Very informative. We have to remember that the Devils and every other team is this league together and if 1 team is affected its only a matter of time before others will be.

I'm not putting this on the GMs, my point is a constant rise in the cap lets them off the hook too often.

Also who's paying for a rise in the cap, fans are feeling the pinch and many are tapped out already.
