Barrie could be a useful 3rd pair/PP guy on another team, but because the Habs are not in a position to take advantage of him during his current contract, it doesn't make sense for them to trade for him.
There might be an argument for a positional swap of an equivalent contract (Hoffman for Barrie, 1 for 1). I'm personally against that because we need a better defensive RHD to support the young LHD, and Barron can better use those sheltered offensive minutes for his development.
There's no reason for Montreal to take on the extra salary or give up Evans, let alone a pick. You may be able to sell Barrie and get something, but what you're sending would have to outweigh what you are getting in return. Barrie and a 3rd for Drouin as an example. Even swap for this year and a 3rd for taking Barrie's extra year. (Again, I'm personally against it, just talking what is a reasonable expectation.)
