They could get both and still have an above average prospect pool

BUF
  1. Meier, Timo
Additional Details:

  5. 2023 2nd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
I have seen fellow sabres fans say things like "we just need to stay the course and continue to rebuild." i definitely dont think they need to trade pieces for rentals, but Chych has 2.5 years, and Timo will most likely come with an extension, and worse case scenario you have him 1.5 years. I think buffalo could still maintain an above average prospect pool while making huge jumps with 2 great players who have term

1st is top 10 protected.

  1. Johnson, Ryan [Reserve List]
  2. Jokiharju, Henri

I dont see a world where that gets Meier. The talk right now is guys of Mercer/Jarvis level.

Obviously it hasnt been met yet, but Ostlund isnt gonna do it

Mercer/Jarvis isn't being traded. Timo would've been already traded if those guys were available. Prospects like that never get traded.

Maybe not, but the ask isnt going from that to Ostlund

Ostlund is a good prospect. That's probably the kind of prospect you'll get back in a trade.

The Mercer/Jarvis talk is just reporters being dumb. Like Clarke being available a few weeks ago.

Ostlund is ok, but every team in the league can offer him. You dont stand out with this offer at all

Never understood why people are scared to trade prospects for sure things like Meier or Chychrun who knows if those prospect will ever pan out

not every team can. boston doesnt have a prospect close.

and yeah, theres lots of Ostlunds. but theres not many teams that are willing to part with an Ostlund along with a young C on pace for 50 points, a good goalie prospect, and a first and second. Buffalo is one of the only teams with that kind of firepower to utilize

I mean we don't know what's being offered. A lot of teams could've beaten Faber for Fiala, but they didn't. A lot of teams could've beaten Ottawa's offer for Cat, but they didn't.

Best offers might be Noel Gunler or Mukhamadullin.

Anybody would trade these prospects in a vacuum for Timo/Chychurn. These moves don't happen in a vacuum though. There are cap reasons why fans are hesitant to make these moves. Timo will have a significant cap hit. Chychrun is a FA in 2 years.

I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn’t have to give up that much.

If Jarvis or Mercer where offered there isn't much on top of that if at all. Those players won't be moving. Imo this offer for Meier is too much but Buffalo can afford it if they so choose to. don't see any team trying to beat this, These moves definitely put Buffalo on the next level.

This is curious to me. Mercer was taken in the 20s, Jarvis was 13th I believe. Ostlund was taken 16th in his draft. Besides Mercer and Jarvis being 3 years older, and having a few extra years to show that they are indeed going to be nhl players, why so sure that these guys will be better? Honestly, I would rate our forward prospects- savoie, kulich, ostlund, then Rosen- but it's close. Savoie was the earliest pick, but he's 5'9", and hasn't taken the big step we might have wanted (to be fair, the winnipeg ice are loaded, and he's on track). Kulich looked really good in the juniors tournament, and he's doing OK in the ahl, he's probably closest to nhl ready, he's 5'10" but he looks a lot more muscular). Ostlund is also 5'10", playing against men and producing now, probably trending towards solid middle 6 center). Rosen I have as last because he's a winger and he still needs to add some muscle, he also looked very good in the juniors tournament. I just don't see these guys as being all that different.

remember how much people put in for Eichel than what it actually was? This Ostlund trade is probably realistic.

Goofy as it is Ostlund was technically in that trade too

    True
But the more important issue (imo) is that it’s hard to see w way where we can pay Chychrun and Power and Dahlin all the big $$$ they’ll demand on their next contracts

Chych expires a year after the other two, so you wont have to re sign them all at once. A skinner buyout of a different trade might happen to. Speaking of, i think the best thing to do is to lock those guys up this summer long term to keep the AAV down. maybe Rasmus at 8x9M and Owen at 6x7.5M?

Just bc we wanna lock them up now (at a lower cost) doesn’t mean the player will agree- they have agents for a reason

If Dahlin costs under $10mil then Adams should get GM of the year
He could easily cost around $12mil per

And just bc Chychrun would presumably sign a year after Dahlin & Power, it doesn’t mean we’d be able to afford him at around the $10mil per he likely demands

I don’t see how we can devote around $30mil per year for 3 defensemen
That’s just not smart to devote that much Cap to the defense

Why are you only considering the future? this Buffalo team is good now, and these trades theoretically should lock them into the wildcard spot. then you still have him 2 years. If youre out of the playoffs by the time he expires, trade him and he will surely fetch you a 1st +

Bc we aren’t winning a Cup this year- or next
And giving up major assets, to turn around and flip Chychrun for less of a return in a year or 2 seems pretty dumb to me

Especially when we can use our assets to bring in guys that can help now- and in the long run

It’s not a video game dude

thats not a video game type move though

The metro is gonna be wide open. buffalo has an absurd riches of young talent. Youre getting Chych for 2.5 years

Sure, if we wanna lose him for nothing
In all reality, if we did this, he should be traded before that last season even starts (to maximize his trade value)

And he’s not good on the right side
Not a good match for Power

And it is a video game move
Acquiring someone for the short term while we are still building is just nonsense in this case
It would only make sense if he got into our top4 and was gonna be here long term

Proven vs unproven. Ostlund is good, but clearly not a Mike Grier pick and not scoring at the same rate as other guys.

Rumors last year said the Sharks wanted Savoie and traded down after not getting him (had the chance to draft Ostlund), so I predict he would be the ask.
