Bean for Stillman. Done, change of scenery, whatever the hell you want to call it. Pettersson becomes the Jackets number 1C immediately, and they get a 2nd in this year's draft. The Canucks, beyond the D trade, get C Kent Johnson, winger Emil Bemstrom, and two 1st round picks that aren't 2023s .... banking on Columbus with Pettersson as 1C not being so crappy next year. Is this worth it for either side as a draft/pre-draft deal?

That's not great for Vancouver. Their 23 2nd could easily end up being worth more than Columbus' 24 or 25 1st.

What if it was a 2024 2nd and not a 2023 2nd? Or something of that nature?

Personally, I felt that, should Johnson and Bemstrom become what they could potentially become, and Bean gives Vancouver a better option than Stillman, whether as a 3rd pair or a 7, and the two 1st round picks, thinking from the Jackets' perspective, that is a pretty penny to give up, even if it's Elias Pettersson returning. Which brought in the extra pieces.

Well, it's obviously a lot closer. A 23 VAN 2nd could be about like a 18th-20th overall any other year.

I don't like it for CLB honestly. Kent Johnson is a special player. And CLB has control for quite a few years. Pettersson isn't going to make enough of a difference to offset him and 2 firsts, plus the additional $10M he'll be asking for in a year.

But this is the type of package to even keep VAN on the phone

You're right, I just wouldn't do it if I'm CLB. They have too many holes to fill.

Really shouldn’t have wasted my analysis on an old Horvat/CBJ post that rolled into a Pete convo. Should be nearby now if interested.

Just a few points:
•Hate to bail on Bean after less than a full season of games on the ice for CBJ. He goes from a 1st round pick to traded for a 2nd to traded for a player from the 4th. But change of scenery, economics, and making a larger deal work all are valid arguments.

•Bemström *definitely* needs a change of scenery. I still see high potential. But not in Columbus.

•Regardless of class depth, VAN’s ‘23 2nd will NOT be more valuable than CBJ’s ‘24 1st. Bumpy roads ahead. Even if CBJ excel and pick low in ‘25, that’s the price of the gamble to potentially land a top-5 pick in ‘24. And definitely no guarantees the ‘25 pick won’t be top-5 either. Quite the gap to close, and with all due respect, would imagine a drastic improvement in W/L record if CBJ played in the Pacific rather than Metro.

•Johnson is a special, special player. Maybe he never puts it all together, but I would bet otherwise. The Vancouver homecoming would be story-book, but can’t imagine him available. Particularly for Pete at this stage of his contract.

I have plenty more and would love to see CBJ acquire Pettersson. Makes sense. Will drill down more after March 3, as we concur this is an off-season move. Let’s see what assets the teams acquire in the meantime.

When one thinks further on it, the Jackets might rather have more of a power forward centerman to play with Gaudreau and Laine, someone to create the space for them to work with, draw checkers, and create havoc in front of the net.. an Eric Lindros clone... someone like...Dubois...

Built like Dubois, plays like Dubois, but not like Dubois between the ears. Plenty of players clash with Torts; understandably so. But an already disrespected market couldn’t afford disrespect from within. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I still plan on cobbling together a trade package for Barkov; just need to commit to ignoring all other posts first. That’ll unlock Laine’s full potential.
