Detroit is obviously selling off some assets now so why would they bring in a veteran

They need an elite defenseman who can captain our PP. We struggle to generate offense from our D and Karlsson is a massive upgrade over Hronek. On top of that we have quite a few swedish players in the pipeline who could definitely use a mentor the next few seasons (Edvinsson, Soderblom, Raymond,Berggren, etc). If the Wings can get him at 35-40% retained he will definitely improve their playoff odds this year, and significantly improve them in 2024. The bottom line is the Wings need to start playing in competitive games to get valuable experience, and if Karlsson is healthy he will definitely help them get there.

They can just buy a veteran in free agency to mentor if that’s what they want. This is a steep price for him and also I don’t see Stevie y giving up any picks in the top 60 for 2023
