Well send him back, but the Ghost of Dobby, a 4th line plug, and a future 3rd is not getting it done.

If we take a third it's without taking cap back, and it's this year's pick.

The future third is the price of taking Khudobin off your hands. Kiviranta is a UFA and thus utterly worthless to us, so this is just giving Klingberg away. Anaheim declines.

I'll bet not.

With his decline, even @ 50% retention...I'm not sure JK gets more than a 2nd....but ANH should be happy to get anything in the range of a 3rd, no? Even if you're taking cap back, as long as that dump comes off the books at the end of the year it shouldn't matter

What decline? He's scoring at the highest shooting percentage in years and his foot speed is still there. His assists and +/- are down, but that's more a product of the team around him than an issue with Klingberg. He's showing poorly because we tried to slam a square peg in a round hole, he's the same guy he's been for the last few seasons, just maybe more aware that his success was a product of his environment than him being hot ****.

No.

That would apply if OUR guy weren't coming off the books this July. Klingberg has positive trade value (perhaps minimal, but still positive) and part of the benefit of trading him for us is disposing of some part of his salary (NOT his cap hit, because that's meaningless to us). In this particular trade, the exchange of Klingberg with retention for Khudobin would actually COST us money due to the retention plus the fact that Khudobin's salary is more than 50% of Klingberg's. And that's without the negative burden of the other Star stiff. And then there's the additional fact that neither of the new players would take Klingberg's place in the lineup, which is an additional negative.

So, No, we wouldn't be fat, dumb and happy to take anything for Klingberg. We might as well keep him if there isn't an actual measurably positive benefit to trading him. And as I said, the third isn't compensation for Klingberg; it's compensation for taking on Khudobin. (You know darn well that Khudobin + a future third = Future Considerations.) Exchanging Klingberg for Kiviranta is a big LOSS for Anaheim. And this trade isn't "getting anything in the range of a 3rd" for him.

I think there needs to be clarification...I wasn't suggesting that Klingberg is a cap dump or that he has negative trade value...I was suggesting that someone like Khudobin is different from, say Zaitsev. Multiple trades so far this season have included unevaluable players on expiring contracts that didn't impact the value of the trade. If a guy is a pending UFA, he's more of cap ballast vs a cap dump and that's been proven in the trades we've seen.

Someone like Zaitsev who has another year definitely had negative trade value because there's an onus on Chicago to take on that cap for next year. Unless the financial situation of a team is in dire straights, a GM shouldn't bristle at the need to take on an expiring contract of a useless player assuming he's happy with the return coming back on the main components of a trade.

I won't be surprised if Klingberg nets a Bertuzzi-like return. So let's say a 1st and a 4th. If they're willing to accept that for Klingberg...all I'm saying is that I don't think the ask changes if Dallas has them take Khudobin, too.

The ultimate return will depend on the demand.....it doesn't sound like there's a whole lot of teams bidding on JK but we can't really know that for sure...and even if it's been quiet so far doesn't mean things can't change in the next 24hrs....

but ultimately, yes...he was brought in to try and build up his value and presumably trade him at the deadline. So they either like him and re-sign him or they move him for the best offer, even if that's lower than perceived market value
