We Could Have Been A Great Team

Created by: la_scaloneta
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2023
Published: Mar. 18, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Too many GMs in the NHL are just trying to fit pieces into a puzzle without understanding how it’ll actually fit the overall picture, which is the team’s system. MoRon is another example of this.
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Petry, Jeff
Additional Details:
Petry is a good player but it should’ve been Dumoulin being sent to MTL for him
2.
NJD
  1. Smith, Ty
Additional Details:
Smith will be good but not yet
3.
SEA
  1. Carter, Jeff
Additional Details:
Never keep a 37 year old for a young player with high potential
4.
WSH
Kept In 2020 offseason instead of signing Jankowski - we had no good reason to let him go for that cheap
    5.
    COL
Another player we let go when we could’ve easily kept him
      6.
      MIN
Another really good player for the system that we let go when he could’ve been retained

I guess the offer for ERod was 3x3 and that was before Malkin signed. not sure if it was before Letang. Would that ERod signing have hurt the Pens ability to resign Malkin or Letang?

I don’t think so. The issues on PIT are self inflicted cuz they should’ve let Carter walk, trade Dumoulin and Kapanen. Keep everyone else and you have a good team with 6 million in cap space.

Flyer Ron clearly sabotaged this team. He wasted whatever was left of our window and now it’s time to start the long process of rebuilding.

The original offer was reportedly Pettersson for Petry, but Hughes was pushing hard for Matheson. I don't think Dumoulin would have worked.

You must be insane if you think the Habs would do a trade back for Petry

Probably not because the 3mil would just be Kapanen's salary and then let him walk

Well Dumoulin is more experienced and has achieved more so maybe Kent Hughes would have preferred a veteran presence but Pit Simply didn’t make him available.
