Is that really worth it tho? Cap space is the most valuable asset. Kings should be contenders for years to come, but you would rather have Petersen on the payroll untill 2026 instead of making the team better?
I know Petersen’s contract is not a boat anchor, but trading away Monahan with only a year left on his contract cost a 1st round pick. I would say this is pretty reasonable price when Petersen has more term.
Cap space isn't "the most valuable asset," first- and second-round draft picks are, because cap space can be managed but absence of draft picks can't.
What's burdensome about having "Petersen on the payroll until 2026" when he costs $1 million in 2025 and $2 million in 2026? And how in the world is trading away two second-round draft picks making the team better?
Trading away a $4 million player and getting something back for him is infinitely better than trading away two second-round draft picks in order to save $3.875 million against the cap.
Monahan has nothing to do with this due to the gulf of difference between his buyout and Petersen's. In this instance, Petersen's term is an asset rather than a liability.

Yes, a team can be desperate for a goalie, but it does not mean that a GM would trade for a .905% Ahl goalie who makes 5-million🤣
I know the Jakub Vrana situation was a mess, but he had almost zero trade value at even 50% retained. He was traded for a 7th. Petersen has more term on his deal and you think you can get something back for him🤔
Didn't two actual GMs just trade for Jonathan Quick? Didn't a guy as smart as Stevie Yzerman trade for Alex Nedeljkovic? Didn't somebody trade for Scott Darling?
