23-24

Created by: Kyriakos_Grizzly
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2023
Published: Mar. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
*Red Wings have one +20 goal scorer on the team atm, while some other rebuilding teams have as many as 5. Jason Zucker should help in the goals scoring aspect while also bringing some leadership.
*Clifton is small for a defenseman, but plays like a 6'5" enforcer. Right handed which is important. Other guy I was thinking about is Scott Mayfield, but he is older and is gonna cost more than Clifton.
*Why didn't Yzerman trade Suter at the deadline? Because he is gonna get signed. Suter is versatile and can play anywhere in the lineup. Great on the PK as well.
*Change of scenery for Petersen. UFA-market is really weak this summer and teams that are in a desperate need of goaltending are probably gonna overpay. So why not take a chance on Petersen while getting valuable assets back at the same time? If Petersen is still bad we could buy him out after the 23-24 season and go after a goalie in 2024. Or maybe Cossa is ready by then. Trade in the middle of the season and send Petersen down if the situation gets really bad.

It's only two years. If it doesn't work next year he can get buried and save 1.15M in cap or a buy out which is 1M in year 1 and 2M in year 2. I wouldn't be sending that high of picks back though.

I would do something similar to that Peterson deal, maybe not send picks as high as 4th rounders back but I like the idea. Upgrading 60 or so spots in two drafts is still valuable. They also might be more inclined to do it with the picks going back knowing they can still grab players in those drafts.
I don't mind the idea of Zucker but I don't think Pittsburgh will have trouble resigning him for that deal you offered him. I know they would like to move cap out with Petry and Carter, but I think it's more moving dead weight players with cap. They would rather the money to spend on better players in free agency.
I would bring back Suter at that price point.
Clifton is a good target and I keep forgetting about him. I bet some desperate team gives him more money and term. I wouldn't be surprised if he got 4M x 5 on the open market. He's still young enough to justify a contract like that.
I think that's alot of money for Veleno and term for Veleno personally but I'll be the first to admit I haven't seen him enough to know what else he does in the ice.

That's just a lot of dead money for 2 2nds WITH picks going back as well. Peterson and a 1st (which won't even be that early since LA has been better) for future considerations, or the rights to Brattstrom or something and then we've got something.

I do agree, in that sense. 4th rounders I think are a bit early to go back. I'm not opposed to sending picks back though. Maybe like 2024 5th, cause they don't have one right now, and a 2025 7th since we have two. I guess we will see what the LA fans think but they seem to want to give him another opportunity.

Honestly, they shouldn't pay to dump him what it would/should cost to do it, but to be frank, that's their problem. Detroit shouldn't be looking to do them any favors, to take that contract back, it's going to have to hurt for them to be worth our time, or, just don't do it.

Yeah I hear yeah. If he doesn't bounce back then we will be over working Husso again. Could just bury him in the minors and let the cap just be there. Really would depend on the return.

No, thanks, we'll be putting up with Petersen's $3.875 million cap hit for one season. If our cap situation were that dire, we'd trade someone like Alex Iafallo at below-market than take a complete loss on the one year. And that's if some team wouldn't be willing to pay say a fourth and take a chance on Petersen because the "UFA-market is really weak this summer and teams that are in a desperate need of goaltending are probably gonna overpay" because they, too, realize that they can get rid of Petersen for $1 million in 2024 -2025 and $2 million in 2025-2026. Petersen's contract isn't close to the "boat anchor" that, say, Brendan Gallagher's or Josh Anderson's is.

I think this is kind of close to waht happens. We plug holes maybe take a cap dump in a position of need like Rd or goalie. Then sell at the deadline. It's another year of the lottery for us.

Is that really worth it tho? Cap space is the most valuable asset. Kings should be contenders for years to come, but you would rather have Petersen on the payroll untill 2026 instead of making the team better?

I know Petersen’s contract is not a boat anchor, but trading away Monahan with only a year left on his contract cost a 1st round pick. I would say this is pretty reasonable price when Petersen has more term.

I didn’t want to be biased. I don’t know if I would even self do this. Yzerman would probably want at least a 1st round pick back. Or a good prospect.

Yes, a team can be desperate for a goalie, but it does not mean that a GM would trade for a .905% Ahl goalie who makes 5-million🤣

I know the Jakub Vrana situation was a mess, but he had almost zero trade value at even 50% retained. He was traded for a 7th. Petersen has more term on his deal and you think you can get something back for him🤔

Cap space isn't "the most valuable asset," first- and second-round draft picks are, because cap space can be managed but absence of draft picks can't.

What's burdensome about having "Petersen on the payroll until 2026" when he costs $1 million in 2025 and $2 million in 2026? And how in the world is trading away two second-round draft picks making the team better?

Trading away a $4 million player and getting something back for him is infinitely better than trading away two second-round draft picks in order to save $3.875 million against the cap.

Monahan has nothing to do with this due to the gulf of difference between his buyout and Petersen's. In this instance, Petersen's term is an asset rather than a liability.

Didn't two actual GMs just trade for Jonathan Quick? Didn't a guy as smart as Stevie Yzerman trade for Alex Nedeljkovic? Didn't somebody trade for Scott Darling?

You could just google it, but I'll do it for you.

Sabres: Thompson, Tuch, Skinner, Cozens and Olofsson.

Senators: Stuzle, Tkachuk, Giroux, Debrincat and Batherson.

Wings: Larkin. As we can see, lack of scoring is a huge problem.

I mean, if you're counting guys like Giroux and guys who have scored 20 in their careers before, we currently have Larkin and Raymond.

Keep in mind Bert is a 20 goal scorer, as is Vrana, Kubalik will prob hit 20 and Ras would prob hit 20 if he played a full season. So you could easily say we have at least 5 as well, depending on the window of time. Lack of scoring might be a problem but the Wings are only 5 points back of the Sabres, mostly due to a complete collapse after the deadline.
