Offseason attempt to stay competitive

Created by: Puckluckchuck
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 25, 2023
Published: Mar. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Note-this is assuming Kylington is ready to come back by the start of the season
And I really think Wolf deserves some NHL action, and depending on how he does he could get increased starts
Feel free to disagree, I just think this could work :)

No thanks, you can keep Kadri and that rough contract you gave him.

Well, Strome at 5x5 only putting up 36 points doesn't look great either. This could give them both a fresh start...

There's no question Kadri is the better player. The point is he's 32 with 6 years of term (at 7M) and Strome is 29 with 4 years of term. Strome just fits the Ducks rebuild time line better.

And doesn’t clog up money for the future

Exactly. Look forward 4 seasons to when the Ducks are hopefully a consistent playoff team and contender. Does that future team want 36 yr-old Kadri for two more season or an empty roster spot and 5M more cap space to use however they want.

Strome is nothing but a bridge player to get us from here to there. He hasn't been great or even good this season, but he's been good enough for the role he's in. Also judging any forward on a team with an AHL caliber defense isn't very fair to the forward.

Connor Zary seems like a decent prospect but, let's get real: he's never played at the NHL level 3 years after he was drafted and isn't likely to just step onto a Cup-contending team and be a significant contributor. If he were able to do that, he should be playing for the Flames right now. And the Avs are supposed to trade you 4 years of Lehkonen (and the all-important 3rd round pick next year, of course)? That's going to be a hard "no".

I don't see any of the above happening:

Duehr will sign for less, more like $775-875k/yr
N.Ritchie would have to be the same or pass
We're likely done with the Dansk Experiment and will Sign a new Goalie Prospect
Hoping for a Better 3RD option, otherwise Stecher will want at least $1.25mil/yr

Lehkonen is an interesting idea/trade target, but we already have Coleman & Dube and CGY doesn't have the Cap Space for that, so we keep Low-Cost Top Prospect Zary
The BUF Trade is Atrocious for CGY. Huberdeau >>> Olafsson who can Shoot/Score, but that's about it
Neither Team would be interested in a Kadri for Strome Swap, we need to move Kadri to RW to play more like Matthew Tkachuk did for us

How does making 3 bad value trades that make the team significantly worse while also trading away the future help this team "stay competitive."

I see your 30,000+ posts, grand master. Maybe you should do something else with your life instead of criticizing thousands of teams on CapFriendly

Nice deflection. Care to answer the question next time?

As you can see by my profile picture, I’m not a huge fan of Huberdeau or Kadri, but they are still skilled players that could rebound elsewhere. Connor Zary is never getting an opportunity as long as Sutter is the coach, and Lehkonen, Olofsson, and Strome could all play top 6 and who knows, maybe have great chemistry and rack up points for the team next year. I’m not predicting anything, just messing around. Care to argue more?

No, you are welcome to your own opinion even if it's a bad one

Add some retention, and Colorado might want Kadri. Maybe we'd give you Lehkonen for him, but not for Zary
