Off-Season If We Lose The Lottery and Random Thoughts

Description
Ignore the contract numbers, I didn't think through those.***
Also, not going to guess the draft pick, just assuming it's somebody who doesn't play next year. Hope I'm wrong!

I feel like it's worth keeping Sillinger in the AHL until he's show he can play top 6 in the NHL. I'd rather have him turn into a Dubinsky than a Gregory Campbell. Things aren't trending in the right direction.

I am sure one of the forwards gets hurt in camp the odds are against us.. I have Roslovic in the reserves I assume he will get moved.

Philly uses Columbus to dump the Hayes contract. He starts out on the top pair but becomes a middle 6 place holder as Johnson, Sillinger or the top 5 pick emerges. 4 mil a year for a middle 6 center is very reasonable, I think it would be decent value. Plus the Johnny connection. Haye's under 4 mil seems moveable

I think Voronkov will probably start in the AHL similar to what Marchenko did.

I could see a trade for Krug or Falk from St. Louis. They seem to be one of the few sellers. I think Orlov will probably get a similar contract to these guys and I don't think he's as talented so maybe there's a match. THE NTC would make it tough for though. I would also love for the Jackets to take a run at Girard from Colorado. I am not that interested in Provorov, anybody with less than 3 years remaining on their deal before UFA would be bad.

Also, shoutout Gavin Bayreuther, I bet he signs a 1 way to play a bottom pair role on a bad team but that guy has become pretty serviceable. I would love him as the 7th dman. Him and Berni have shown up this season. Neither should be in a top 4 but I think they can hold their own

After finishing this I can't see a world where Peeke, Blankenburg, Boqvist and Bean are playing together. Either one guy is getting injured or one guy is getting moved. Time will tell

I don't think any moves are made for goalies but I hope something changes there otherwise 2024 is going to be a bummer. Looking at this team assuming everyone stays healthy I could see them finishing 13th-7th in the east. Goaltending will determine everything.

You will have to give something of value if we are retaining $3.5 mil.

$3.5mill retention for 3 years is gonna need a better return from Philly. Think of it as trading for 3 years at 3.5 for hayes. Teams would love that contract.

Yeah, I feel like 33% retention is more likely and I'm sure there will be an extra pick or something in there. What do you think it would realistically take?

Even 33% seems unrealistic, while we all agree with more retention and for longer periods on this website, real GM’s typically don’t retain much more than 1-2 mil on contracts over 2 years. Burns to Carolina seems to be more an exception than the rule.

I think there is already a deal in place for the draft with 33% retained for Hayes. I think it was reported by Lebrun I can’t remember. The return was “nothing monumental”

I think it’s smart if you retain to move older players for a better return or to just open up spots for younger players and give those older guys a better chance at the cup, but it’s rare. This is way more logical than a buyout IMO. Always thought the wild should have retained 50% on Suter and moved him to Dallas for future considerations, the contract Dallas gave him was essentially 50% of what he was making with the wild and that would have given the wild a better cap structure and he would have been off the books much faster.

Do you think the Sharks will end up doing something like that with EK?? That would be fun

Karlsson to me for sure is gone this off-season and I doubt we move him without retaining 3mil and taking on another teams cap dump. The hard question is what team has the assets to get him, the cap space or bad contracts to send back to absorb his remaining salary and be a place he is willing to waive his NMC for? It’s going to be an interesting off-season.
And we won’t move him retain and take back bad contracts without getting at least a 1st and a quality prospect in return!

Those trades are horrible for the Jackets.

I do wonder if SJ would be willing to retain on Couture. I think SJ is going to try and move him this off-season. CBJ would be and interesting spot considering the need for centers and the Jackets have a surplus of defense on the right side and some draft picks.
