It makes more sense for the caps to be sending a pick to Anaheim but yes we take this deal.

Why in the world would a team unlikely to get out of the bottom eight next year want a rental forward, especially an expensive one?!?!? (He gets $6.5 million next season.)

Give him good ice time and hope he plays well so you can flip him at the deadline with retention for a bigger return than they got him for. Pretty standard practice around the league

Then we'll give you pieces we're not really interested in hanging onto. Anaheim assumes all the risk in buying him and the caps clear out 6.5 million to make a signing, that's a huge W for the Caps and a huge L for the Ducks.
