Getting a player who has 46p for nothing is very intriguing. But looking at his highlights, this guy is a PP merchant.

How do you figure? He has 20 goals (2 PPG) and 46 points (11 PPP). So 90% of his goals are 5v5 as are 76% of his points.

Agree to disagree. Yes, this season could be the start of a decline but that wouldn't line up with turning 30. He is a good two way player who can also score goals. I agree that as he hits his mid 30s one of the two is likely to curtail but so long as both don't, he'll only be mildly overpaid.

Yes, Detroit has a number of similar players but you can always use more (as evidenced by your own comments about injured players). I'm not saying Rust is worth the Moon but he certainly has more value than nothing and would not require retention to trade if Pit was foolish (or desperate) enough to do so.

See, therein lies the problem. Last year Detroit had so many injuries that there were multiple logjams and useful players being waived to make room. If Bertuzzi and Vrana (and Fabbri and Rasmussen) had healthier seasons, Detroit probably squeaks in the playoffs this year.

Rust may be useful at his cap hit right now, and maybe even another year or two (he isn't in my opinion), but that likely inevitable decline in Rust's game will be as Detroit is a cup contender. That 5 million can be used to extend Seider, Edvinsson, Kasper, Rasmussen, etc etc etc. Rust being useful today doesn't do enough to take a roster spot from a number of younger players.

Possibly. I agree that Det wouldn't be the best fit but IF (big if) Pit were to offer that trade to Det, they would jump at it. He (or another similar player) could be traded at the deadline to fill another hole.

I disagree on your assessment though. I think Rust is an extremely underrated player.

You can say a player of yours is underrated, but really only specifically to the Penguins here. Going to a different team doesn't guarantee similar results. Rust primarily plays with the extremely talented Guentzel, and often gets Crosby too. Rust's point totals are inflated. Every team has their underrated Swiss army knife players. Heck, that was Bertuzzi for Detroit, Nielson for the Islanders, or anyone currently on the Maple Leafs roster outside the big 4 (lol). Role players aren't worth big cap hits unless they produce independent of their linemates. Rust is fine, but don't overrate your role players. It is ok that the Pens are overpaying Tust as a known commodity...until he stops doing things as well as before. Cautionary tale...Justin Abdelkader.

Rust plays primarily with Malkin and Zucker. Still talented but not Guentzel and Crosby.

Also, Abdelkader? Really? Let's look at their numbers:
Rust last 4 years: 250 games. 91 goals, 202 points
Abdelkader career totals: 739 games, 106 goals, 252 points

Rust has 5, 20+ goal seasons. Abdelkader has 1. Rust is having a down year and has better numbers than Abdelkader's best year.
They are VERY different players.
