What could of been

Created by: Aaron_Dell_Pickle
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 12, 2023
Published: Apr. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rumors came out a couple of years ago that during the 2016 NHL draft, Habs were to trade Subban to the Oilers in exchange of Draisaitl and the 4 overall selection. Bergevin wanted to draft Dubois with that pick, but when he was drafted 1 spot earlier by Columbus, the trade was cancelled.
Whoever was the GM never trade Mcdonagh for Scott Gomez
Bergevin never trade Sergachev for Douin
Bergevin never draft Kotkaniemi ahead of Tkachuk
Bergevin never trades the pick used to draft Debrincat for Andrew Shaw
Bergevin drafts Forsberg instead of Galchenyuk
Price Never gets career injuries

I know its a much harder job than that to be a GM and he never could of knew how bad these moves would turn out but just to look back for fun

I think they're saying the Subban trade was rumored to be Draisaitl & Edmonton's pick in that draft, which would have been PLD. Insane to think that Bergevin would've turned down Drai & #4OA for Subban just because Dubois was off the board, though - as good as PK was, that's just such an incredible overpay we'd *still* be harping on it 7 years later if it came to pass.

@Boltsbeathabs when he sees people having fun by looking back at a GM's moves: scream Very Angry huff Very Angry huff

Honestly I dont know why you're getting so pissed for nothing, I litterally said in the description: ''I know its a much harder job than that to be a GM and he never could of knew how bad these moves would turn out but just to look back for fun''. Oy vie!!

No it couldn't be PLD as Jarmo Kekelainen made the statement prior to the draft "Others think more highly of my countrymen than I do . " No one should have been surprised when he drafted PLD 3rd

We don't know the details, but I'm almost certain that it was Edmonton that turned down the trade, not Montreal.

This doesnt mean he would of drafted PLD, its just means he wasnt too high about Puljuarjvi and Laine.

2016 is prime Chiarelli years - not saying you're wrong, but saying it's much more believable when you remember who was manning the phones back then.

Yeah but other GMs couldnt have known before the pick was actually made. All he said was that he wasnt a fan of Laine and Puljuarvi.

I think the rumour had the 9th overall pick going back to edmonton too. So would've Subban + 9th OA for Drai + 4th OA

Aaaaand then 5 days later we get Subban for Weber

My point is he wouldn't have been available at 4 when Edmonton drafted .

Ironically, the story is that when Puljujarvi dropped, Chiarelli canceled the Montreal trade.

Jeez, what an absolute butterfly effect of a day that day was. Imagine Draisatl, Nurse, and whoever the Habs would've taken at #4 in Montreal with Subban & 9OA from that year in Edmonton? Absolutely bonkers

Crazy, eh? That's Chiarelli for you... he also traded #16 & #33 for a defenseman who was playing 2nd pairing in the AHL after losing out on the Dougie Hamilton sweepstakes. Those picks turned into Mat Barzal and Mitchell Stephen's (and Sebastien Aho and Brandon Carlo were still available!).

He was so intent on fast-forwarding the rebuild he was bleeding value all over the place. He single-handedly set the franchise back several years in the space of a few weeks that summer.

oh i was going to be nice and not mention the Griffin Reinhart trade - but yes, I am acutely aware of what Chiarelli is capable of lol. the Stephens pick got flipped with a 3rd to become Anthony Beauvillier, but unfortunately that 3rd rounder become Anthony Cirelli. Amazing that Reinhart is probably the 5th best player in that little 2015 draft trade tree.

I swear Edmonton's "what could have been" team would have won multiple Cups by now.
