Description

I do not think there is a reason to panic. I think there is logical steps to take after this season.

The first is simple, fire Sutter. He was never going to work and everyone knew that. I would hire the current AHL coach Mitch Love. Yes he is young with not a lot of experience, but I think that is the fresh take this team needs. Plus Love has a winning season record in every WHL and AHL season he has been a head coach.

Secondly, is to bring up the young guns and get this team some youth. Wolf, Coronato and Zary add some much needed youth to a team that just feels old. All three will be expected to play some big roles but I believe they can handle it. Wolf very likely could be the number 1 goalie by the end of the year with his track record throughout his career.

Thirdly, is to free up some cap by moving players on either expiring deals or players who I think the Flames should move on from. I believe Backlund is the best example of moving out players. Toffli is another player I would move while their is still some value. Vlader is a cap causality.

Lastly extensions, Lindholm, Dube, Tanev and Wolf should all be signed to extensions.

While the team is technically not better on paper than this years team, I believe they will be better. A fresh young coach, a younger core with players playing for meaningful time and a refreshed team after a long offseason should see the Flames fighting for a playoff spot.

Blackhawks get a decent backup with some term. Allows them to be competitive without being down right awful with Vladar in net. 3rd is to ensure no cap is retained by Flames.

Additional Details:

Flames bring in some draft capital for a upcoming UFA. Backlund has spent his whole career here but the team needs to get younger and its better to get some picks than let him walk later on.

Additional Details:

Jets get the 2C then need with the impending departure of Dubois to Montreal. Backlund can play that second role until Perfetti is ready which then Backlund drops down to a shut dwon 3C role.

Additional Details:

This deal is done at the draft this year. Olofsson is likely another player I would deal at the upcoming deadline for the Flames. The real value here is the first round pick.

Additional Details:

Sabers get an elite winger capable of putting up 70 plus points a year. Olofsson is sent over for cap reasons and Toffoli could be picked up for an extension if he plays well. Buffalo makes a stronger push for the playoffs.

Hmm... interesting idea for Backlund, but Perfetti is unlikely to be the 2C. He's primarily played on the wing. The 2C spot in the future will go to Lucius.

Jets are the last team that should be giving up higher round picks especially with Dubois likely out. I'd much rather play lambert or lucius and let them get some games than pay for a center that doesn't really do anything for us

With the Hawks having just signed Commesso to his ELC, Chicago isn't a good landing spot for Vladar. Hawks will have Soderblom and Stauber battling for backup G in training camp

100% agreed. They MIGHT sign another veteran on a league minimum contract because Mrazek does get hurt quite often, but someone that knows they'll be riding the bench for most of the season. Hawks need to maximize the amount of time those (3) prospects get. Regardless of AHL vs NHL...just get ice time.
